There are a lot of factors that affect how one’s beliefs and morals are formed, but in 1996, only 27% of the American people favored same-sex marriage while 68% opposed it. Public opinion can have a significant impact on one’s beliefs and morals. During the 2008 election, the Democratic Party (Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama) expressed their opposition to same sex marriage, encouraging others to support and in 2008, 50% of Americans agreed with the same-sex couples. By 2016, that number shifted drastically to 61% of Americans in favor of same sex marriage. As you can see, what is ethical is not necessarily what most people believe, and the government can also have a strong influence. It wasn’t until more than half the American people voiced how they felt for things to take a change for American, when we think of freedom this includes the right to love without limits.

Part 3: Position Statement

It is not necessary to define marriage by unions for couples to included or excluded others.

Part 4: Reasons in Support of Your Position

There should be no requirement that marriage be a conjugal union as long as each partner freely chooses to be married. Human beings form all sorts of unions without the approval of morality and ethics. In 2015, the Supreme Court adopted the 1967 Loving vs. Virginia ruling as a direct argument in its case legalizing same-sex marriage. This ruling of Loving vs. Virginia prohibited interracial marriage and was a form of unconstitutional racial discrimination. When a person gets married, they join with their partner and share emotional intimacy, becoming one flesh. The definition of marriage is not dictated by any concept or anyone’s morals except those of the two persons getting married. Marriage is about love and being connected and limiting unity and love based upon the gender of the two is not ethical and inhumane.

Part 5: Opposing Position Statement

Same-sex marriage is not rationally justifiable and should not be permitted.

Part 6: Reasons in Support of the Opposing Position

Contrary to popular belief, marriage should be between heterosexual couples according to the Bible, which forbids homosexual relationships. One of the strongest and most common arguments used against same-sex marriage is that marriage is, by definition, a union between one man and one woman, so the definitional argument against same-sex marriage is called. In their article “What Is Marriage?” philosophers Robert George, Sherif Girgis, and Ryan Anderson (2010) call the view that defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman the conjugal view. Traditional marriage is associated with bearing and raising children, which is only possible when partners are of opposite genders. Proponents of the conjugal view argue that society benefits when parents raise their children according to the “traditional” family model – a mother and a father raising their children.
