Plascencia-Carrizosa

All About My Family Assignment (50 points)

The goal of this Assignment is to reflect and learn about your family and more narrowly define your culture. As explained in your California Department of Education Family Partnerships and Culture Curriculum Guide, the questions noted in your reading are not necessarily intended to be directly asked of families in your program as they are written, “but are for reflection, to help assess one’s own understanding of important aspects of one’s own family and the lives of the families served” in the programs and classrooms where you will work. The CDE guide continues on to explain that, “these questions provide an opportunity to reflect on one’s own cultural beliefs and the impact of one’s cultural perspectives and experiences on judgments about cultural beliefs and practices of others”. Taking the time to reflect in this area can help you to evaluate the potential future influence of your own experiences on the teaching approaches and interactions you engage in with the children and families you will work with. (SLO #3)

After reviewing the CDE Family Partnerships and Culture section (pages 20-46), work to explore your own personal dimensions of family culture. This assignment will follow a similar format as your Social Identity Portrait with the focus being to better understand your family of origin and/or those who raised you or who you grew up with.

First, find the fourteen (14) areas listed on pages 35-39 of the CDE Family Partnerships and Culture Guide, under the section titled, “Issues to consider in Learning about Families and Culture” which are bolded as titles in Box 2 and Select 12 of the 14 categories/sections to discuss (not individual questions).

Write one paragraph for each of the 12 sections you select and for each section, explore the questions that are listed. Each question listed in each section does not need to be addressed or rewritten specifically, but rather work to write a paragraph for each section that sums up the section as it relates to your family. (36 points)

Next, in a minimum ½ page reflection, discuss the following: (9 points)

What was this experience of reflecting on your family culture like? Were there specific aspects of your family culture that you recognize have impacted how you view yourself and others? Explain what was most significant.

How do you see your own family upbringing and culture potentially positively impacting your teaching and interactions with children and families?

And most importantly, what do you see as some of the potential challenges that might impact your teaching and interactions with children and families and how might you deal with these?

Finally, in order to gain further knowledge of the families and communities of the children you (will) work with, it is good practice to gather information about them in order to get to know them better (SLO #2). Considering this, select 2 questions from pages 100-105 of the appendix in the Family Partnership and Culture Guide that you would use in a family questionnaire in your class/school.

For each question, explain how each response to this question from the adults could influence your classroom practices in relation to diversity, culture, or anti-bias curriculum.

Be specific and explain why each question is relevant. How will knowing the answers help you to plan for the child and their classmates? What specifically might you plan?

For example:

Question #1: If your family has any pets, what can you tell us about them? If no, then do you plan to have any soon, which would? Why or why not?

Relevance: This information about a family and their pets relates to diversity because… I would use this information to …

-Submit your document to the Turnitin assignment tab posted in Canvas after you have reviewed your work and worked to proofread and correct writing errors.
