I rushed to the bathroom, throw some water in my face, and fly down the stairs as I try to fit my keys and papers in my briefcase. It’s too late to take the train but I don’t know where I left my wallet and phone. I knew I should have gone home after those three drinks.

It’s now 11 am and I’m finally at work. I step into the tall, well-lighted, and busy building and immediately rush into the first elevator that opens.

“Congratulations on the job promotion,” said Julie with a smile on her face.

“Thank you!” I replied while hiding my eyes from the unusual bright elevator lights.

“You’ve been out celebrating, haven’t you?” Julie asked.

“Yea,” I replied nervously.

“You always find a reason to go out and have fun, your life is so much more interesting than mine,” Julie said as she stepped out of the elevator.

Finally, the elevator gets to the eleventh floor and I can get out. I take the long way to my office. Mainly to avoid Mark, my boss from seeing that I’m one hour late. I’m so thirsty I could drink a whole gallon of water in two sips, it’s not even noon but I’m so ready to go to bed. But I know how to make all this better.

I go to the cafeteria and get the biggest cup of coffee they have to offer. Quickly, I rush back to my office and in one of my cabinets, I store something that will take this coffee from 100 to 1000. I pour about a cup of Smirnoff into my coffee and now it’s ready for me to drink it.

Not an hour passes by and I finish my giant cup of coffee. I really thought this coffee was going to wake me up and keep me going for the day. It used to do the trick, I guess I just need more. So I go down to the cafeteria for the second cup of coffee, but this time I add about two cups of Smirnoff, now this will do.

I get through the day just fine. On my way home, I stop by the bar I was in last night. I was just looking for my phone and my wallet. I was lucky this time because Daniel, the bartender had saved them for me. I wasn’t so lucky last time. I walk home and take a cold, long shower. When I get out, I got a call from Bobby, my best friend.

“Wanna go bar hopping?” Bobby asked.

“I don’t know, I have to wake up early tomorrow, I got to meet a client at 7 am somewhere around Central Park,” I said.

“It’s just a couple of drinks, we will be back early. You know I’m getting married soon so we got to enjoy the time we got left,” Bobby said laughing.

“Alright, alright. I will meet you at 7 pm in the bar near my place.”

It’s ten past seven and Bobby is still not here. I guess I will get a drink to get the night started. I don’t know why I came here early, I knew Bobby was going to be here late. He is always late, even when we were in middle school and his mom used to drop him off, he was still late. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is late for his own wedding. By the time Bobby got to the bar, it was almost eight and I already had a couple of drinks.

I know I have to go home soon, the client I’m meeting tomorrow is very important for the firm. However, we decide to have two more drinks at another bar, just two more and then I will be off to bed. I get an Old Fashioned while I’m having a nice conversation with Bobby. We talked about how well our work lives are, Bobby is an architect and I’m a lawyer but at some point, we were college dropouts and had no clue where our life was heading. We discussed going to Montana to visit my parents but maybe in the future. Many hours later and fifteen cocktails later, I realize It’s late and I must go home. I was actually supposed to be home a while ago, this time I grab my wallet and my phone and get an uber. I take a couple of cocktails to go to keep the fun going.

When I get home, I immediately get in the shower because the uber driver mentioned that even my pores smell like alcohol. I let the cold water run through my body as I finish my last cocktail in the shower. Suddenly, my eyes close and just like that I’m asleep or at least that’s what I think.

It’s 8 am. I’m late again, this is the fourth time in a row.

Feedback:

Darleny Diaz Professor Grove ENG 121 Aug. 05.2021 I look at my clock and it’s 10 am, I’m late again.
