What are the advantages and disadvantages of this design?

The research design utilized a mixed research design were the method is not important, the problem is the most important and researchers use all methods to understand the problem statement. (Rahi, 2017). The research utilized both quantitative and qualitative data, but a feature of this research design that stands out it when the researcher planned to create the research instrument for the quantitative data. Creating the quantitative design after the qualitative research is complete allows the researchers to design a more accurate measurement instrument. Building the research instrument in this manner will enable the researchers to collect more accurate and significant data. The manner in which the research constructed the research instrument in addition to the substantial amount of time the researchers dedicated to ensuring data quality and validity checks is a significant advantage of the design.

One disadvantage of the design is the length of time that the study took to complete. Analyzing the research schedule there appears to be a significant amount of dead time where there is no activity occurring. The sale of lottery tickets occurs continuously throughout the year. The faster the data could have been collected and analyzed, the more beneficial it could have been in raising revenue for the state.

Evaluate the MET process. What are some of the strengths and weaknesses of the MET technique?

The main advantage of the MET process is the level of detail the researcher is able to collect. MET research conducted by Elliot et al. (2016), showed an enhanced quality of the data, characterized by the in-depth personal meaning of participants’ experiences, assisted the researchers’ appreciation of the participants’ experiences, which led to a more analytical in-depth analysis of the data collected. In large part, this is due to the researchers’ ability to ask additional questions or seek clarification when answers are too vague or unclear.

One of the weaknesses is that the data collection is very time consuming for both the researchers and the survey participants. Under these circumstances fatigue for the participant or the one conducting the survey may set in, which could result in errors in the data collected. One additional potential weakness of the collection process is that an individual may struggle to communicate feelings or impressions of images accurately.

What measurement scales are used in the sample questions provided? Why might the lottery attitude and lottery importance questions have presented the most challenge to the professional researchers?

It appears that the researchers utilized Likert scales to collect survey data. Likert scales are very common in survey data collection. “The response categories in Likert scales have a rank order, but the intervals between values cannot be presumed equal” (Jamieson, 2004). This has the possibility of influencing the accuracy of the data collected.

There are several challenges that researchers may have faced when creating the lottery attitude and lottery importance questions. The first issue they may have faced was determining the correct scale to utilize for the questions. Choosing a scale with too many or too few options could result in skewed data. Another challenge would have been to ensure that the questions were worded in a way that clearly and concisely state the question.

Using text Exhibit 12-2, map out the likely quantitative instrument content.

The likely quantitative instrument would initially be demographic information. The study would want to identify if the Ohio lottery player is consistent with larger lottery demographics. Research conducted by Herring and Bledsoe (1994) indicates that the degree of lottery participation is a declining function of both education and income, and that rates of participation are higher among males, blacks, and older respondents.

The survey contained several questions that would alert the researchers that the participant was not taking the research process seriously. Is this a good or poor idea? Why?

“A particular challenge of conducting surveys is that responses are vulnerable to participant carelessness or fraud” (“Supplemental Material for Participant Carelessness and Fraud: Consequences for Clinical Research and Potential Solutions,” 2020). Having questions inserted into the survey to enable the researchers to identify participants that are not taking it seriously is a good practice. The research sponsor has the right to quality research, and if the researcher is able to provide more accurate and significant research by weeding out participants that are not participating fully, they should do so. Although researchers do have an ethical responsibility to survey participants not to deceive them, inserting questions to alert researchers to participants that are not participating in good faith is not a violation of this ethic as no harm is being incurred on them.

Evaluate the MET discussion guide for the Ohio Lottery Research.

The first stage of the discussion is the introduction. One of the most important aspects of this stage is that the interviewer tells the participant that there are no wrong answers. Letting the participant know this can increase trust and openness with the interviewer. This is important as according to research conducted by Barton (2015), elicitation techniques can reduce power imbalances between interviewers and respondents, which can enhance a participants’ ability to elaborate on their own conceptions of pa picture, rather than limiting them to predetermined categories.

The second stage is the MET interview, where the interviewer actively engages with the participant. The pictures the participant brought are discussed and any needed additional of the participant’s thoughts can be obtained by the interviewer.

The third stage is understanding the decision making process or the participant. In this stage, the participant is asked about their thought process in choosing to play the lottery. For some participants this may be a challenge, while for others it could be easy. Corinthians reminds us that, “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything” (Crossway, p. 556). For some of the survey participants that do not play the lottery, this may well be their reasoning. Gambling is an addiction and once an addict starts down that slippery slope, they may wind up enslaved by their addiction.

The fourth stage is the wrap-up where the participant is debriefed the interview is concluded

Barton, K.
