Clinton et al. (14) averred that it is vital for filmmakers to employ cinematic devices as such features help bring out the most important elements associated with the movie. That way, the target audience can have an easy time connecting with the story, hence serving the film’s intended purpose.

Among the most compelling cinematic techniques used by filmmakers are camera shots. According to Rothe et al. (26), a significant part of filmmaking involves the visual aspect. Therefore, filmmakers have to be masterly when operating the camera as the end product will have a massive impact on how the viewer will interpret the story. The movie The Hurt Locker employed varied camera angles that helped the viewer get a better view of the characters and tell the film’s mood. There are scenes of medium shots, long shots, and medium close-up shots that show the soldiers who are armed to the teeth and ready to combat any danger within their vicinity.

Additionally, the movie Saving Private Ryan employed cinematic techniques like the medium close-up shots and close-up shots that brought a closer image of the soldiers and their artillery to show that war was looming. Clinton et al. (67) acclaimed that multiple camera angles and shots are essential in a film as they help the viewer engage and get affected by the ongoing scenes in the movie. For instance, the close-up shot of the soldiers getting shot in the waters employed an emotional appeal. It successfully created a connection with the viewer and the characters’ sad facial expressions.

Consequently, Apocalypse Now employed medium close-up shots then gradually used extreme close-up shot to escalate the emotional intensity of some of the scenes. The medium close-up shot of the burning plantation accompanied by the helicopter and, after that, closely followed an extreme close-up shot of the character’s face worked well. It drew the viewer to the scene to figure out what would happen in the next episodes. Besides, the sound of the helicopter and background music played an essential role as they delivered the information to the viewer about an upcoming war in the subsequent scenes.

Chattopadhyay (56) stated that sound has a vital role in a film as it emphasizes the visual images and generally helps create the mood in the movie. The sound effects in Saving Private Ryan got well articulated as the filmmakers helped to connect the audience with the scenes. For instance, the sounds of raging waters and gunshots raised the production value and drew the viewer closer to the settings. Besides, the sudden lack of sound when the soldiers were dying gave the action more weight and raised an emotional appeal as the audience could relate to what was going on and empathize with the characters.

Rothe, Sylvia, et al. “Interaction techniques for cinematic virtual reality.” 2019 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces (VR). The beginning of Hurt Locker starts with a man speaking in a foreign language and a location popping up. Baghdad labels the scene and chaotic visuals as showing what seems to be a war-torn country. Shaking camera footage and anxiety-inducing music also create tension. Next, we are shown a different and more controlled perspective contrasting what the civilians are facing. The viewers at this point are in the dark as to what the focus has been brought to. The previous visuals, chaos, and audios of earlier scenes are no longer in the background and the camera movement mocks a documentary. Off the topic but I noticed something ironic that Anthony Mackie who is in the marvel universe as well as “Blaster one” or Guy Pearce is in Iron Man 3 as a villain. It is funny to see them working together all though in another universe they would be on different sides. The scene moves very slowly, the intent to which I assume is to build tension and the senses are magnified. Next in the Saving Private Ryan scene, which is incredible and each time I watch more jaw dropping, the music camera shots and use of effects make the scene graphic, impacting, and intense. The use of the gray colors also convey the seriousness of this event. Lastly, in Apocalypse Now the scene opens with a strange song that is somewhat eerie with the comparing visuals. The song moves from ear to ear and the sound of helicopters seem to be in the background as a “beat”. The colors of red and orange emphasize the intensity of fighting and war. The use of sounds are very brilliant as well as they demonstrate the effects of PTSD.

Bottom of Form

STUDENT 2: RHEA BAHTIA

In The Hurt Locker, the filmmakers use a shaky camera, likely due to a handheld camera. The shakiness of the camera heightens the sense of reality making viewers feel more as if they are witnessing the scene. The uneven, jerky movements help amplify the chaos and panic in the opening scene. The sounds of commotion and screaming voices create more of a sense of panic as well. The low angle of the camera for a certain portion of the scene makes the viewers feel more immersed in the commotion with the surrounding voices and legs running past. Furthermore, when the man is geared up walking towards the machine, we hear sounds of a heartbeat and a train, adding to the worrying feeling the viewers have for the man as well as the fear that something bad is about to happen. The technology used as well as the gear present implies that the film takes place a bit more recently and in a third world country with all the dust and worn down buildings. In Saving Private Ryan, we witness a shaky, uneven camera again, also possibly implying the use of a handheld camera. This again creates a heightened sense of reality and a feeling of unease and fear for the soldiers in the opening scene of the film. The sounds of thunder, gunfire, and explosions, all add to the sense of panic and fear the war scene creates. The sound coming from different locations also makes the viewer feel more immersed into the scene. Near the end of the scene, the sound muffles sounding distant until it almost disappears. This creates a sense of confusion and implies that the main character is feeling overwhelmed by all the violent chaos as well as all the bodies dropping around him. The boats and guns make this scene seem to take place more in the past, perhaps the mid-1900s. Lastly, in Apocalypse Now, the stillness of the opening creates a peaceful mood, but also mildly suspenseful with the helicopters flying by. Then, suddenly the explosion occurs ruining the calmer sense the film had before. The music in the background diminishes the fear and agony associated with explosions and fire, almost making the viewers feel further away from the disaster. It creates more relief amidst the panic. The sound of the helicopter getting closer near the end when the music fades brings the viewer more into the film as if the plot is truly beginning. The old song and furniture in the opening scene make it feel like it is taking place more in the past as well, maybe again closer to the mid-1900s.

PLEASE RESPOND TO BOTH STUDENTS 150 WORDS EACH!!!
