How to make sense of cultural identity in a multicultural space? How do you express and perform your culture(s) in a city like Dubai? <\/p>\n<p> Similarly to Humans of New York (https:\/\/www.humansofnewyork.com\/) and taking an anthropological perspective explore Dubai through its residents, conduct an in-depth interview with a relative, colleague, friend, acquaintance and compare your work with a classmate in a presentation. <\/p>\n<p> This project is a both individual (interview and report) and pair (presentation). <\/p>\n<p> It is worth 30% of your total grade. It contains two parts: a mini-fieldwork and a report (20 %) and a presentation (10%).<\/p>\n<p> Online \/ face-to-face Interview <\/p>\n<p> Interview can be unstructured or non-directive; however, the followed topics need to be discussed (you can add more topics if you would like to):<\/p>\n<p> Demographic data <\/p>\n<p> (name, last name, nick name, DoB, PoB, ethnic group, nationality, time spent in Dubai, religion\/beliefs, social status) <\/p>\n<p> Socio-cultural Environment <\/p>\n<p> (place where raised, major cultural group, type of housing, type of services -phone, internet, TV, etc.- describe social classes, basis of the economy (oil, industry, tourism, etc.), health care system, education)<\/p>\n<p> Family life and gender roles <\/p>\n<p> (type of marriages, rate of divorce, who raised the children, who earned the money, types of jobs done by parents, types of education, games played as a child, with whom, when are children expected to move out of the parent\u2019s home, what methods do parents\/people use ton control family members -guilt, shame, punishment, love, exclusion, etc.-, at what age are children expected to help with work around the house \u2013 same for male and female?, do family members work together?, do family members live close to each other\u2019s, patrilineal\/matrilineal\/bilateral?, nuclear or extended family in residence and authority?, who represents the authority in the family, social activities -types, with whom)<\/p>\n<p> Education<\/p>\n<p> (type of schools, teachers, curriculum, class size, mixed or non- gender mixed, quality of education)<\/p>\n<p> Language <\/p>\n<p> (primary language at home, difference in speech of men and women, rules of conversation between men and women, between older and younger, specific terms of reference -for aunts, uncles, etc.- forbidden topics in polite conversation, in the family, type of humor or joking, greetings, popular topics of conversation among strangers and among friends, role and importance of gossip, body languages -polite or impolite-, problem mention directly or talk around)<\/p>\n<p> Religion\/ beliefs<\/p>\n<p> (major beliefs in your religion, special ceremonies, worship, prayer, religious beliefs changes, special celebration or holidays, special traditions, rituals surround the birth of a new baby, rituals related to eating, rituals related to death, taboos related to place)<\/p>\n<p> Cultural change<\/p>\n<p> (how has your culture changed over the years? Change in the culture between generation? What do you like most in your culture and intend to pass on to your children?)<\/p>\n<p> Living in Dubai <\/p>\n<p> (what do you like the most about Dubai? What is your favorite place to go? Do you feel being part of a community? Which one? According to you, what is so special about Dubai?)<\/p>\n<p> Report (individual) + (compiled)<\/p>\n<p> The report is a written summary of the conducted interview. It must be introduced and concluded. <\/p>\n<p> 1200 words, Plagiarism 15%: 20 marks<\/p>\n<p> APA style.
