It should be a draft that you have revised and checked for grammar, punctuation, APA citation, etc. All drafts should be checked against the instructions before submitting.

A Note on Style

Good writing is direct, too-the-point and detailed. Try to say as much as possible with as few words as possible. Be specific about the date and place of events, the names and positions of the important people involved, the names of organizations, etc. Where possible avoid general statements and use specific details instead. For example, rather than write, “The protestors demanded reform,” write, “The protestors called for defunding the police. . . .” Pay attention to the way the news articles are written. They always are clear and very detailed and you should be too.

Note: Do not submit your BLM Draft as your BLM final. The BLM Final must show that you have edited and revised your BLM draft.

The Plan of the Essay

The draft is a complete essay.

The complete essay is:

Introduction

Background

Mac Donald summary

Smith summary

Two opinion paragraphs

Conclusion

You already have the background paragraph and a summary of Mac Donald’s article. The summary of Smith’s article follows the same format as the summary of Mac Donald’s article.

Here are the instructions for the introduction and opinion paragraphs:

Introduction

The introductory paragraph provides a brief overview of the essay and states your thesis. As you are evaluating a pro- and an anti-BLM source, your thesis must indicate which source you agree with.

An introduction has an opener—a newsworthy incident or event—that should get the readers attention. For this essay, you can begin with 2 or 3 sentences describing the killing of George Floyd which sparked the BLM protests. Include details such as place, date, names, etc.

No citation is required at this point as the killing has been widely reported by the media.

Start with the incident itself. Do not start with a prologue.

Perhaps you have referred to the Floyd incident in your background paragraph. If so, you may want to move what you have written to the introductory paragraph for your opener.

Following the opener, you should write a sentence connecting the incident to the BLM protests and then connect the protests to the controversy over BLM.

Describe the two opposing sources. Use this format:

Mac Donald (2016) argues . . . [and then state Mac Donald’s thesis in your own words]

Smith (2017) argues . . . [and state Smith’s thesis in your own words]

Do not include their first names or the titles of their articles.

Then transition to your thesis. Indicate whether you agree with Mac Donald or with Smith and state a reason for agreeing with one and disagreeing with the other.

Do not use the word “I.”

The introduction should not be longer than 8 sentences.

Two opinion paragraphs

You back up your thesis in the two opinion paragraphs. Each opinion paragraph should start with a topic sentence stating one reason why you agree or disagree with Mac Donald or with Smith.

Each opinion paragraph should discuss one reason for agreeing or disagreeing with Mac Donald or Smith. Make sure each paragraph discusses a separate, distinct reason, rather than a restatement of one reason.

Each paragraph should refer to Mac Donald’s and Smith’s arguments. Do not introduce new, extraneous ideas in the opinion paragraphs.

Do not re-summarize Mac Donald’s or Smith’s articles. Refer to their specific arguments.

Contrast Smith’s and Mac Donald’s arguments (preferably in the same paragraph) while showing a clear preference for one over the other

Do not use “I.”

Conclusion

A short paragraph restating your thesis and summing up your view of the matter.

Things to Remember

Begin the essay with the incident. There should not be a prologue, not even one sentence.

Paragraphs should be about 8 sentences. Summaries may be a bit longer.

Do not use “I,” “we,” or “us.”

Do not include your personal experiences.

The essay should be double spaced.

No article titles or the names of periodicals should appear in the essay.

Writing the Black Lives Matter Draft The draft you submit for peer revision should not be a rough, first draft.
