After implementing the Affordable Care Act (2010), the expectations included an almost comprehensively healthcare insurance-covered nation, but the progress fell short of the expectations. The epidemiology of healthcare costs shows alarming healthcare access trends (Alspaugh, Lanshaw, Kriebs, & Van Hoover, 2021). According to the CDC (2019), “epidemiology is the study of the distribution of health determinants in a given population.” Some aspects of epidemiology in healthcare include the incidence of a health determinant, its distribution, and other factors related to the determinant’s statistics (CDC, 2019). The high cost of healthcare is a significant issue of concern in all healthcare fields globally, with the United States ranking as the country with the most expensive costs of healthcare. The cost of healthcare in the United States is a determinant of health that negatively affects the majority of the population in various ways. Still, the primary outcome is reduced access to healthcare for most Americans.

Etiology

The United States’ cost of care has increased drastically to alarming rates. The top financial worry for Americans is the high cost of healthcare. Many Americans confessed fear of healthcare costs over the fear of rent, transport, and food. Most adults in the United States admitted that they could not afford most healthcare-related costs not covered under Medicare, including dental services, hearing services, and prescribed and over-the-counter drugs. 50% of Americans ignored or went without dental care services in the past year because of the cost concern.29% confessed to missing prescriptions after diagnosis due to lack of affordability (Stokes, 2021). Some consequences of the high cost of care, thereof, and difficulties in affording healthcare services in the United States leads to lack of access to needed healthcare services, for instance, failing to complete doses and skipping healthcare sessions.

Although the high cost of healthcare is common to every American, it is disproportionate and discriminative based on affordability. Lower-income individuals and families face the challenge more conspicuously than those with higher bargaining power. The disproportionality also affects some ethnic groups, with the Hispanic and the African-American population confessing a higher rate of skipping or avoiding healthcare services due to high costs. The complaints were more pronounced in the Hispanic and Black people without health insurance coverage. The protests were minor among white people (Levy, Ying, & Bagley, 2020). The leading cause of these statistics is the higher bargain power among white communities than the bargaining power among the people of color in the United States.

Health insurance coverage appears to be a solution for Americans with difficulties affording the increasing care costs, but it is not a comprehensive solution. Health insurance, in most cases, caters to primary care and few additional services and neglects some essential elements of care that are vital and expensive. The demographics show that 49% of Americans with healthcare coverage found the out-of-pocket healthcare costs too because of alarm and exceed their financial capacities. 27% of the insured population also complained that the cost of insurance premiums at times exceeded their bargaining power (Ansell, 2021). Employed Americans with coverage felt that the healthcare coverage deductibles were sometimes overwhelming.

Families in the United States suffer from the high cost of care. Consequences such as skipping and avoiding dental care have led to severe dental concerns in the patients. Failing to afford prescription drugs also makes the diagnosis ineffective as the patients do not treat the conditions. The most common consequence includes lower life expectancy in low-income neighborhoods. Areas of healthcare that show the most significant challenges in affording to include dental services, mental health services, and purchasing prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Some states have higher healthcare costs than others, with the average cost of insurance in West Virginia most increased at $712 per month. The price of healthcare is lowest in New Hampshire, where the average monthly cost of health insurance is $335 for a typical 40-years old applicant (HowMuch, 2021). Regardless of the lowest price in New Hampshire, the charge is still considered to exceed the affordability of the poorest families in the State.

Data Display

Healthcare Item

Average Monthly Cost in the United States

Percentage of Americans who cannot comfortably afford it

Dental Implants

$3,000 to $4,500

10% of Americans who needed the services as of 2018

Prescription Drugs

$1,000 per person

7% of American adults

Assisted Living

$4,000

80% of Seniors

Conclusion

It is evident that the cost of healthcare in the United States impacts the health of Americans negatively in various ways, including reduced access to healthcare. The cost of care is the most alarming budget to Americans, exceeding the fear of rent and food budgets. The price affects low-income and uncovered populations more, but it also negatively impacts Americans with health insurance coverage. The most negatively impacted ethnic groups are Hispanics and black communities without health insurance. Some states report higher care costs, such as West Virginia, while the price is lower in others, such as New Hampshire. However, the lower costs are also relatively high considering, the lower costs in other countries. Legislators need to increase government funding of health insurance coverage and reduce from-the-pocket healthcare costs, which lead to skipping and avoidance of essential healthcare services such as dental services.

References

Alspaugh, A., Lanshaw, N., Kriebs, J., & Van Hoover, C.
