In this week’s class lecture we learned that some families have generations of being in gangs. For example in the video we saw on you tube, it talked about a family who basically was a generation of gang members meaning the father was a gang member so then his kids and grandkids were also gang members because that’s the environment they grew up in and had no choice but to become a gang member. We also learned that the new generation in gangs changed the rule of how things were done before. For example the youngsters now a days have no respect for anyone and are just ruthless and back in the day the gang members had respect as to how things were being done. Chapter one tells us how living in poverty or poor communities can lead someone in joining gangs. It is also said that gang behavior and persistence comes from not being able to have what other families have so they seek crime to get what they need and in order to do this they have to be from a organization that has a leader that tells them how to survive which is basically through crime. Gang members are competitive, so this is where there behavior is shown through aggression. In order for the organization to work they need to respect their community they live in and by doing that they help the community when they are in need, also these gangs need to be linked with other institutions to make their organization work and be able to survive. My father was a gang member and was pretty much in and out of jail during my childhood years. My father never had me around his friends and never wanted me involved in any gang activities. My father was raised in a poor neighborhood full of gangs and his parents at the time were into drugs so they never took care of him. He said that the reason he joined a gang was because he had no other choice but to survive and find a way to take care of himself since his parents were not able to do that for him. He says that if he would of had different parenting guidance he probably would of never taken that route. He also said that back then they had respect for women and children and they never really had problems with anyone besides their rival gangs. He did say that the younger gang generation is way different as to them just disrespecting whoever. So many things are true from what I learned as far as poverty and certain circumstances leads youngsters into becoming gang members. Luckily my dad was able to change and lives a different life as well as my grandparents. His lifestyle growing up related to our lectures and some of chapter 1 readings in a sense that poverty led him to gang life and different codes that they had to go by to make their organization work.

1 Weekly Reaction #1 In this weeks class lectures and Chapter 1 readings I was able to get a sense of how gangs are developed, why people join gangs and theories of gang behavior and persistence.
