My overarching response to _________’s argument is __________________ [concluding statement].

What Not to Do in an Academic Summary

Within the summary, it is not appropriate to not state whether you agree or disagree with the author’s idea or comment on the quality of the writing (whether you think the writing is good or bad).

Be clear and provide transitions to be coherent and to show relationships among main ideas represented, but be concise and make every sentence count.

Keep the length of quotations to a minimum, limited to the author’s key ideas, definitions, and special phrasing. In general, paraphrase the main ideas (using your own words) to demonstrate your understanding of the text.

Do not repeat or restate points unnecessarily. Do not include minor points and details. Mention specific details only if the author gives them special emphasis. Mention specific examples when they are essential to illustrating the main idea.

Do not mix your opinions with the ideas summarized.

Paragraph Structure

Paragraphs are the building blocks of writing, and so a paper is only as good as its paragraphs. Paragraphs organize the development of ideas and the order in which those ideas are presented. They provide the logical structure for the paper. A paper with strong paragraph structure helps the reader make the connections between ideas that allow the reader to get the point of the text.

Paragraph structure amounts to a few key elements:

A transition sentence that connects an idea from the previous paragraph to the topic of the current paragraph,

A sentence that announces the topic or focus of the next/current paragraph,

A number of sentences that develop the focus of that particular paragraph, and

A transition sentence that connects ideas and gestures to the focus in the next paragraph.

Why Use the Template

The template helps writers and readers understand the on-going scholarly conversation around this topic. The template reminds the writer to create an interesting title that is relevant to the text’s argument and what they want to say about it. The template helps identify the main idea the text’s author wants to communicate. The template reminds writers to quote from the text using the “quotation sandwich” strategy: signal phrase, quote, and explanation of the quote. The template shows novice writers how and when to paraphrase various sub-points the author makes and when to give an example from the text (story, specific details, experience) that illustrates an important point the author makes. The template reminds writers to acknowledge at least one counterargument, or a perspective that is different from the text’s author. The template helps to restate the author’s argument in a new way, as a rebuttal of the counterargument. Finally, the template reminds writers to state a personal opinion—separate from the summary—that is based on an accurate understanding of the article.

*Adapted from Graff & Birkenstein’s writing exercise on page 15 of They Say/I Say, 2010. Please keep in mind that in this Argument Summary exercise, you will focus on the author’s view not on your opinion. In a final draft of the assignment, you may give your opinion but it must be separate from what you have identified as [author’s] argument.

Some Great Title Relevant to the Text’s Main Idea In “Name of Essay,” [author’s title and full name] provides an argument about _________________________________________.
