The magazine article simply describes and demonstrates our conception of self-esteem and explores how we misconstrue a variety of connections that have contributed to certain actions dependent on scenarios. Moreover, the author mentions several studies done to experiment the effects of self-esteem on people. Furthermore, Dr. Lauren Slater includes a direct conversation he had with psychologist David Adams who works as a therapist on a program known as “Emerge” and Adams speaks about the characteristics of his clients. The aim of this magazine article is to evaluate how self-esteem impacts our social lives in many ways.

The magazine article begins by asking the reader popular questions used in questionnaires which evaluates how we define our self-esteem. An included example is “I feel that I am a person of worth, at least the equal of others”. The results from this test helps people to make assumptions about our lifestyle which defines our actions and behaviors. Generally, people with more confidence have a high self-esteem and do better on given tasks than who lack confidence. However, this does not mean that having low self-esteem is dangerous as Emler points out, because those people academic performances can be similar to others.

Hypothetically, high self-esteem can be dangerous for us and the people we’re surrounded by. The article states that three studies conducted in the United States in only one year have shown that people with high self-esteem are more likely to target people with low self-esteem. Typically, this influences how we regard our self as we begin to focus on who we are and worry about our social role in life, which diminishes our self-esteem and morality.

In a conversation with psychologist David Adams it was identified that most of the clients on Emerge were insulting men with a 75 percent of them being taken to courts before. Adams told Dr. Lauren particularly about a client assessed he assessed, who was using psychotherapy for three years with no signs in improving his violence. He asked him about why he hits his wife and abuses her, his response was that he was not feeling good about himself. In fact, hitting his wife will not improve his self-esteem, or neither make him feel good about himself which is what Emerge conveys. To stop those abusive actions from reoccurring, they instruct those men to “honestly” evaluate their behaviors and interact with “Empathy and respect”. This is illustrated by the process of writing about their history then hanging those papers on the wall and read them.

The commitment and work derived by programs such as the Emerge are helpful for those men to psychologically make them review their mistakes to deal with them in the right way. Therefore, this helps them to reduce their aggressive and abusive characteristics which enhance their self-esteem and give them more confidence and love in life. Those steps are very important to humans in social psychology because our self-esteem will define us through how we value and give impression about ourselves to other people. Therefore, our self-esteem is a force that drives our actions, so, for example, the observed client does not feel good about himself, which led to making him decide to be part of aggressive behaviors to avoid the conflict he feels inside of him.

Reference

https://www.nytimes.com/2002/02/03/magazine/the-trouble-with-self- esteem.html

The Effect of Self-esteem in Social Psychology The New York times article “The trouble with self-esteem” by psychotherapist Lauren Slater relates to the social psychology concept of the need to protect our self-esteem.
