As a social worker, it is expected to be able to work with all kinds of cultures and always be culturally competent. Some people find their “calling” working with a specific group whether it’d be those who specifically want to work with Latin groups, Asian groups, LGBTQ groups or even just working with children and families specifically. One that did call my attention is working with older people, their spirituality, and their religion. Being able to choose a group I have not worked with but came across will be an opportunity for me.

Identifying Selected Population

The population that is in my interest is working with older people, their spirituality and their religion. I am personally not religious but grew up around people who were. Most of my family, aunts, uncles, are much older than I am and pertain to different religion such as Catholic or Christianity. According to World Population Review (2021), Florida comes in at 55% of residents are in a religion or practice religion. I interact with this selected population everyday whether it’d be working with my patients and doing assessments where we ask about their religion briefly and the social workers, I work with do biopsychosocial on the patients where religion, age, all pertains to their biopsychosocial.

To give better example, my mother is very religious and practices Catholic as her religion. She will talk to me always using religion or examples how religion can change my life or how I must always put God in everything. When I was younger, I did all the requirements to be fully catholic but not by choice, more like an obligation, so it didn’t help me want to be fully involved or enjoy it. I do believe there is a God, there is prayer which I do time to time, but personally I don’t go to church or do everything my mom does.

As a future social worker and wanting to learn more now how to be able to service this community and learn more history, I have grown interest seeing this in a much more mature way. From what I have seen in hospitals, religion plays a big part in patients who will be going to hospice, have had fetal demises or passed away in the hospital. The religion aspect helps the social workers have a better idea if the patient would want a funeral, how they want to be put to rest and religion plays a big part in this. According to Moale et. al (2019), each religion has a different has different religion views with end of life. Catholic church (which falls under Christianity) considers nutrition and hydration and mandatory and must be administered towards end of life. They practice both cremation and burial while Islamic religion does not allow cremation. Therefore, it’s very important to know the religion to be able to assist the family accordingly.

Justifying Chosen Population

This population is important to me because I am not too sure what population I want to work with in the future. I have a family member who is a social worker, and she works with elderly people and mainly focuses on hospice care. She told me how her job can be mentally draining but after a while she knows it’s a job and must help her patients to ensure end life and all paperwork for the family, funeral arrangements, are set for when it is time. I have mainly worked with younger clients and families, but never with older people, nor religion aspect.

Implications I might see in this area is working with multiple religion and knowing right away how to appropriately address issues or concerns especially in that aspect. One must have a basic understanding of all religions and even if we don’t know, we must try and still be knowledgeable. Patients, clients, depend on us to know these things and how to be able to speak to them properly about it. According to Nelson-Becker, et. al (2008), there is religion, but too there is spirituality and differences between both. As she stated, “spirituality is a more general concept than religion”. Knowing how to differentiate both can bring some complications as sometimes the clients might have both and can confuse perspectives. Being much more knowledgeable and learning more about this can give a smoother process with the older people.

The increasing diversity in society has brought vast changes and opportunities for social workers. Culture competence is the capacity of the social workers to deliver quality services to the public including the elderly while considering their various cultural beliefs and practices in health provision. Over the years, various professionals and institutions have tried to incorporate the aspect of cultural competence in promoting the health of a given society. The elderly are a group of individuals that require special treatment. Culturally oriented competency enables the delivery of efficient services that are free from ethical and racial biases. Traditional research in the care of the elderly was majorly controlled by the aspects of religion and spirituality. Most elderly patients believed that healing comes from God and for a person to receive healing, they must involve the power of the supernatural being. When these studies are compared, cultural competencies offer the best therapeutic outcomes.

An Analysis and a Description of Traditional Research, Addressing the Concern of its Cultural Significance.

Traditional research is a type of research that is majorly focused on the spatial orientation of a group of individuals rather than their perception of various issues. Traditional research was also concentrated on the spiritual and religious aspects of the researcher. The findings in traditional research are primarily assumptions made about a particular problem or concern and hence the result of inaccurate information (Nortan, 2018). Traditional research is relevant as it enables the individuals to understand their origin and hence, they will appreciate why certain things happen the way they are. This factor is linked to culture as it defines how individuals in a certain group should behave.

An Analysis and a Description of what Comprises Culturally Relevant Research.

Culturally relevant research is a type of study that primarily focuses on cultural beliefs and practices as the center of the research process. Additionally, this type of research utilizes the cultural viewpoints of both the researcher and respondent to come up with a strategic plan that does not indicate any form of bias between the groups involved (Jongen et al., 2018). The cultural views influence aspects of research such as the study design, methodology, and data analysis. Cultural competence in research creates an environment of trust and understanding between the parties involved hence easy communication between the groups involved.

An Analysis and a Description of Studies that have Addressed the Elderly

Cultural competence is significant in all areas of social work practice as individuals from diverse cultures are involved. According to Jeon, it is important to incorporate cultural competencies when dealing with the elderly (Jeon, 2018). The elderly patients often hold certain values and beliefs that may be difficult to conscience them otherwise. It is therefore the role of the social worker to listen and understand them and try to deliver care that focuses on all these beliefs and practices (Nortan, 2018). This approach will enhance the patient’s adherence to the treatment regimen and hence a better therapeutic outcome for the patient.

Since old people present with different diseases, it is important to ensure patient-centered care and individualized treatment. Patient-centered care focuses on delivering care that concentrates on the cultural beliefs and practices of each patient (Jongen et al., 2017). Improvement of communication between the patient and provider is also an advantage of an institution that embraces cultural diversity. Open communication with the patient will enhance the kind of information shared which will aid in influencing diagnosis.

Differences between Traditional Research and Culturally Relevant Research and how that Impacts the Elderly

Traditional research is therefore research that is focused on the spatial orientation of the elderly patients rather than their beliefs and practices as in culturally relevant research. Whereas culturally relevant research can influence the development of strategies to identify and understand unique issues that are experienced by the elderly, the traditional research approach focuses on the geographical location of these people and the origin of these groups of people (Jeon, 2017). The traditional research places more emphasis on the spiritual and religious aspects and this is especially for the elderly population. Cultural relevant research has little influence on religion and spiritual aspects.

Connection of Culturally Suitable Study to the Promotion of Social Justice for the Elderly

Cultural relevant research is connected to the promotion of social justice to the elderly as an understanding of the cultural values and beliefs of the elderly and how this understanding promotes their health-seeking behaviors and hence a better outcome (Jeon, 2017). Additionally, understanding the cultural beliefs and values of the elderly will aid in the development of strategies that are essential to help exist in society exclusively. This factor will aid in the development of a safe space where the individuals interact openly with each other through shared ideas and judgments.

Engagement in Collaborative Practice to Advocate for Proper services.

Social workers may be involved in campaigns that advocate the aspect of culturally relevant research. Additionally, education and enlightening their peers will also improve their understanding of this topic. Practices such as team building often aid in bringing individuals together and sharing new ideas.

References

Jeon, M. (2017). Emotions in driving.
