Such epidemics also lead to extreme devastation to the economy, which result from factors like high morbidity rates reducing productivity (Kozlowski, 2012). Economies also spend a lot of money in their fight against the spread of respiratory infections hence being prone to financial distress. Thus respiratory pandemics lead to adverse effects like deteriorating respiratory health of people infected, the poor mental health of people in the economies affected, and backward performance of the economy. Since 2019, there has been Covid-19, a respiratory pandemic that has been an ongoing global health concern. The pandemic has created global anxiety by depriving economies of their freedom to perform well and reducing the world population excessively due to high mortality rates. Therefore, the devastation the virus has caused have urged the need to research the interventions necessary to curb its spread.

Methods

The research on the interventions necessary to curb the spread of respiratory epidemics (including Covid-19) has demanded analyzing existing articles that address the issue. The articles are on various scholar-oriented platforms like Google Scholar and nursing journals which provide profound information regarding the topic and a guideline to observing a gap in the research topic. Through literature review from five articles, I was able to find an area of research within the topic of respiratory epidemics. The research has richly depended on CINAHL to collect data that helped develop the project proposal. The research also involved observing people’s behaviors regarding how such conducts impact the spread of the Corona Virus.

Project Proposal Topic

The research question for this project is ‘Why is it so hard to stop Corona Virus from spreading?’ To answer the question, the project analyzes the interventions made to curb the spread. One of the necessary interventions in curbing respiratory infections is hand washing (Olapeju et al., 2021). By observing people’s behaviors, the project realizes that cleanliness is not fully adopted to curb the spread, especially in stations. Thus, it formulates the title ‘Creating cleanliness Through Cleaning Stations.’ Therefore, the project proposes to enhance cleanliness at the Sing With Me Daycare by introducing resources for hand-washing within the station. By improving cleanliness at the daycare, the risk of contracting the Corona Virus will reduce among parents, staff, and kids.

Review of Literature

According to Kozlowski (2012), respiratory epidemics are devastating to economies and human life; hence interventions need to be taken to curb their spread. The article provides that vaccines are necessary for curbing the spread because people gain immunity hence not overwhelmed by the epidemics. However, vaccines alone are not adequate to curb the spread; thus, other necessary measures need to be taken (Kozlowski, 2012). Measures like hand washing using flowing water and soap, hand sanitizers, and the proper coughing and sneezing procedure help reduce the spread. Studies show that cleaning hands inactivates respiratory viruses, reducing their spread rate and severity (Kozlowski, 2012).

Kids are at a higher risk of succumbing to the Corona Virus than adults because of their weak immune systems. Thus measures like hand hygiene should be promoted among kids to reduce the spreading rate of the virus. However, studies have shown how difficult it has been to promote hygiene to curb the spread. According to a study conducted by Biezen et al. (2019), parents and primary care providers agreed that hand cleaning is essential to curb disease transmissions. However, there have been difficulties in implementing hand-washing projects among young children due to parents being afraid that hand washing will affect their children’s health children’s obsessions with washing hands, among others. To curb the challenges, solutions like assuring parents that hand washing will not adversely affect their children’s health and teaching children hand-washing habits are essential (Biezen et al., 2019).

A study conducted on ten countries in Sub-Sahara Africa proved that hand-washing practice had declined regardless of the high death rates caused by the Corona Virus (Olapeju et al., 2021). The decline is due to the over-emphasis on other measures like wearing face masks, which reduced attention to washing hands. It has also been monotonous to wash hands regularly hence discouraging the trend. The study also found out that older people, people with lower education attainability, and failure to know anyone with the virus were factors that contributed to the decline (Olapeju et al., 2021). Thus Covid-19 prevention campaigns should continue emphasizing the need for washing hands.

At the initial stages of the Corona Virus spread, governments demanded school closures to reduce the spread of the virus. However, these closures adversely affected the students’ academic achievement (Hammerstein et al., 2021). School closures had different impacts on different groups of children, with younger ones being affected negatively more. Thus other better policies need to be applied to substitute for school closures to enhance the positive academic performance of the children. One of these policies is introducing hand-washing programs to curb the spread while children are physically present at school.

Hand washing will have other benefits in children’s health apart from helping curb Covid-19. According to a study conducted by Willmott et al. (2015), children aged 3-11 years were used to analyze the impact of hand-washing on curbing gastrointestinal and respiratory infections. The study results show that washing hands reduce absenteeism from school because children are healthier. Thus, hand washing impacts children’s academic excellence due to low health issues that may affect their class attendance. Hence it implies that hand-washing programs are necessary for enhancing quality health for the younger children in schools.

Findings

The literature has shown that the risks of Corona Virus infections are higher for children than for adults. Children at schools are even at a higher risk of getting infected than those always at home with parents. Thus necessary measures should be taken to protect the children from contracting the virus and succumbing to it. One effective measure to curb the spread of the Corona Virus in schools is introducing a hand-washing program (Willmott et al., 2015). The program will help fight other infections, too, apart from respiratory ones.

According to Biezen et al. (2019), introducing a hand-washing program in schools is likely to face various hindrances due to issues like children obsessively washing their hands. Parents may also be unwilling to let their children adhere to the program’s demands for fear of their children’s health being affected negatively. Thus in the attempt to introduce hand-washing resources in schools, children should be taught hand-washing habits, and parents should be assured of the safety of their children.

Conclusion

Therefore, hand washing is necessary for the battle against Corona Virus spread. Other measures like social distancing and wearing masks should also be emphasized. However, people have been unable to apply all these measures collectively in some countries. For example, hand washing has been declining while people still wear masks (Olapeju et al., 2021). Thus the campaign against Corona Virus spread should still emphasize the need for hand-washing. Schools and daycares should also introduce hand-washing resources to protect kids, staff, and parents against the virus.

References

Biezen, R., Grando, D., Mazza, D., & Brijnath, B.
