Once to get the general gist, mood, and feel of the<br \/> thing, then again to begin the process of deep noticing. <\/p>\n<p> Your job as<br \/> a reader in a workshop is to help the writer see their own poem clearly.\u00a0 What you would do if it were your poem is not<br \/> important\u2014you have your own poems to write, but this is someone else\u2019s poem,<br \/> and so you want to try to understand what their project and intent is. <\/p>\n<p> Provide written and spoken commentary<br \/> for each workshopped poem. Be specific. Answer the questions of \u201cwhy\u201d and \u201chow\u201d as often as you<br \/> can. \u00a0Write on each other\u2019s poems to show<br \/> where you are responding to exactly. <\/p>\n<p> Consider<br \/> these areas: <\/p>\n<p> -form: what patterns do you notice? This<br \/> might include line lengths, stanza lengths, repetition, rhyming, meter or<br \/> rhythm. Does the form suit the content, in your opinion? Why or why not? <\/p>\n<p> -imagery: are there sensory descriptions<br \/> and details? Are they clear? Concrete (as opposed to abstract)? <\/p>\n<p> -language: how has the poet used simile<br \/> or metaphor? Is there word play? What is the diction like? (conversational,<br \/> formal, slangy, regional?) Do the words seem carefully chosen? Why or why not? <\/p>\n<p> -intent: what do you think the poet<br \/> wants to achieve with this poem? How do you know? In what ways does the poem<br \/> succeed in its purpose, and in what ways does it fall short? <\/p>\n<p> -questions: what do you want to know,<br \/> after reading this poem? <\/p>\n<p> -trouble spots: where are you lost,<br \/> confused, uncertain, or uninterested? Why? <\/p>\n<p> -favorite moments: what words, phrase,<br \/> lines, images, ideas, etc., appeal to you?
