Nurses’ motivation and passion for their work motivate them to identify major gaps in healthcare facilities and relate them with real-world experiences leading to significant improvements. Some of the factors that can lead to nursing advocacy include, scarcity of healthcare equipment and personnel that cannot meet the increasing patients’ healthcare needs effectively leading to further complications. Nurse-patient ratios are the major problem in the Florida healthcare system whereby, the existing nurses cannot cater to all the patients’ needs, especially during the covid-19 pandemic.

Nurse-to-patient Ratio in Teaching Healthcare Institutions

The appropriate nurse-to-patient ratio in teaching healthcare institutions is 1:3 and 1:5 in general hospitals. They include licensed, registered, and practical nurses who understand and deliver appropriate initiatives based on the patients’ requirements. Every state is obliged to determine the staffing issues in its healthcare institutions and develop appropriate measures to meet patients’ needs (Clifford, 2018). Therefore, Florida should embrace the American Nurse Association (ANA) initiative that requires healthcare institutions to develop legislative models that empower their nurses to play significant roles in developing appropriate staffing plans in every unit that can lead to the development of quality hospital levels flexible enough to explain issues such as changes whenever they experience increased patients’ needs such as; the number of admissions, discharges, and transfers. Nurses’ skills and experiences are crucial in enabling them to determine any issues in their facilities especially based on the staffing ratios (Fotsch, 2019). Quality nursing leaders should have the capacity of organizing resources like technology and ancillary staffing techniques that can help reduce nurses’ scarcity. Florida should develop legally defined requirements that guide healthcare institutions regarding the minimum nurse-to-patient ratios and ensure proper maintenance in different areas such as critical care units and emergency departments.

Staffing Techniques that can Improve Nurse-to-patient Ratios in Florida

Every healthcare institution in Florida should focus on improving nurses’ and patients’ ratios by developing the right staffing techniques. They can follow the national campaign for safe registered nurses to patient ratios. Healthcare institutions that develop appropriate staffing initiatives achieve significant improvements in their practices such as preventing fatigue, promoting patients’ satisfaction, reducing medication errors, and enhancing safety outcomes and patient costs (Fotsch, 2019). The best way of developing effective nursing staffing in healthcare institutions is through empowering the nurses to adapt to the developed models that guide them on the significance of flexibility in their staffing plans. Nursing organizations like the ANA focus on public data reporting initiatives to enhance transparency and develop legal charges on institutions that fail to meet the minimum nursing staffing guidelines despite the efforts and resources invested.

Optimal Nursing Initiatives that can Improve Nurse-to-patient Ratios

Florida can improve its healthcare initiatives and achieve maximum benefits from its registered nurses by embracing optimal nurse staffing initiatives. The best staffing models are those that focus on nurses’ numbers and patients’ ratios adjustments based on the unit and shift level factors. Florida should benchmark other states that have proper nursing ratios and apply the same or better strategies that would yield significant improvements in their patient care initiatives. The best way that they can increase nurses is by opening up paths for more students to pursue degrees in nursing and encouraging them about the significance to improve their attitudes towards the career (Turner, 2017). Furthermore, healthcare institutions can work closely with companies that advocate for major improvements in nurses’ staffing like the Wolters Kluwer which focuses on building world-class education initiatives based on current healthcare institutions’ needs. The major transformations experienced in global healthcare institutions call for better interventions towards reducing major challenges that contribute to poor practices in healthcare institutions leading to more complications among patients.

Holistic Nursing Approaches that can Improve Nurse Staffing

Nursing staffing issues develop due to a lack of holistic approaches among nurses that enable them to address major healthcare complexities in patients’ healthcare needs. Therefore, modern nurses have to focus on expanding their knowledge and experiences through exposing themselves to different nursing and non-nursing disciplines that enable them to develop better initiatives in treating their patients and becoming efficient leaders who can develop major improvements in nursing staffing (Sofer, 2018). Nurses should adapt to the changes experienced in healthcare settings especially the shortages through mentoring more individuals to pursue their careers and develop collaborative approaches throughout the medical care spectrum. ANA addresses nursing staffing levels that can lead to improved working conditions to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

Nursing leaders in Florida should put more emphasis on the nurse-to-patient ratios to promote safe and quality healthcare initiatives because it has been scientifically proven to be beneficial. Enacting a standardized nurse to patient ratio is a major issue in ongoing discussion worldwide that requires better planning to achieve further clinical and economic improvements such as; reduced medical errors, patients satisfaction, and better interventions in diseases such as; pressure, ulcers, and infections acquired in healthcare settings (Turner,2017). Improving nurse-to-patient ratios would also help in reducing mortality rates, readmission, and durations of stay.

Institutional Support to Improve Nurse Staffing

Healthcare workers find it difficult to determine the exact number of patients needed in healthcare institutions. However, if they focus on major factors such as; patients’ intensity, numbers of admissions, discharges, and transfers, they can easily determine the activities happening in different healthcare institutions hence, make better assumptions about their nurse staffing requirements (Sofer, 2018). All nursing association organizations in Florida should support the development of legislative models that empower nurses to be more specific in their development of plans for every unit. Calculating nurse-to-patient ratios involves different approaches that help in determining the volumes of nurses needed based on patients’ volumes.

The staffing needs or workload indicator initiative was developed by the world health organization to create better estimates of nurses’ effective manpower requirements also known as workload indicators that help in analyzing their staffing requirements. It works like a bottom-up approach that emphasizes activity assessment initiatives that help in proper assessments of nursing staff needs through calculating exact numbers of healthcare workers according to healthcare institutions’ workload (Clifford, 2018). Public hospitals require more patients than private hospitals due to the major workload differences. It is also important to identify unforeseen delays such as others’ lagging reactions.

The government should support healthcare institutions’ committees and regulatory bodies in their provision of effective recommendations and responses that help in benchmarking nurse-to-patient ratios while focusing on the critical analysis of existing norms. Effective research is essential in the proper assessment of the major gaps in the Florida healthcare system. The medical regulatory bodies can support research initiatives that help in assessing the gap between exiting nurse-to-patient ratios, especially in institutions that deal with acute illnesses. Adhering to the international staffing norms would also help in developing the best outcomes in intensive care units that give nurses an easier time managing the various categories of patients. Different levels of healthcare institutions require various staffing ratios.

References

Clifford, T. (2018).
