Abuse of Female Workers in the Adult Film Industry<\/p>\n
I. A. The problem: abuse of workers and sexually transmitted diseases are far too common in the adult film industry, and this is surprisingly accepted by today\u2019s society.<\/p>\n
B. Adult film performers currently have no worker\u2019s rights. <\/p>\n
C. Regulation of the adult film industry is badly needed, but ignored due to the stigma surrounding porn.<\/p>\n
D. Audience: California\u2019s Department of Occupational Safety and Health<\/p>\n
II. Physical and emotional abuse of workers is prevalent in the adult film industry.<\/p>\n
A. Physical Abuse: many women in the porn industry experience rape and violence by coworkers while on the job. <\/p>\n
1. Causing physical pain of workers: <\/p>\n
2. Some females damaged their reproductive systems which left them unable to have children (Lubben).\u201d<\/p>\n
3. Not always consensual:<\/p>\n
4. Lack of choice of workers<\/p>\n
B. Emotional Abuse is an issue as well.<\/p>\n
1. Often there is a blurred line between \u201cacting out\u201d abuse and actual abuse going on off camera. <\/p>\n
2. Many female performers report extreme depression, suicide attempts, and trauma after working in the industry.<\/p>\n
III. Lack of protection against diseases.<\/p>\n
A. Sex performers are at high risk for STDs, as they repeatedly have sex for long periods of time, with multiple partners.<\/p>\n
B. In 2000-2001, of the performers in the sex industry that were screened for STDs, 7.7% of females and 5.5% of males had chlamydia, and 2% overall had gonorrhea.<\/p>\n
1. This statistic is much higher than that of non-sex performers. <\/p>\n
2. \u201cPerformers are required in most cases to pay for all screening tests, and to sign a consent form that permits disclosure of their test results to other performers and producers before filming. Both of these practices are explicitly prohibited under (Cal\/OSHA) regulations (Grudzen & Kerndt).\u201d<\/p>\n
C. Only about 17% of heterosexual scenes use condoms (Grudzen & Kerndt).<\/p>\n
D. Many performers required to not use condoms to keep jobs.<\/p>\n
IV. Society\u2019s stigmas about adult film actresses as root cause of problem.<\/p>\n
A. Society\u2019s hostility toward sex (Mayhem). Many view porn as inherently evil and corrupt, mysogynistic.<\/p>\n
B. Adult actresses are looked down upon and not seen as human beings who are deserving of workers\u2019 basic rights and safety. <\/p>\n
1. The stigma associated with porn causes many people to ignore when sex workers are exploited and hurt.<\/p>\n
2. This allows abusive porn producers to control the industry.<\/p>\n
V. Policies that are already in place to regulate the porn industry:<\/p>\n
A. The only federal regulation of porn that exists already is the banning of child pornography (Grudzen & Kerndt).<\/p>\n
1. All adult film companies are required to have a \u201cCustodian of Records\u201d that holds records of the ages of all performers (Grudzen & Kerndt).<\/p>\n
B. California\u2019s Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal\/OSHA) requires use of condoms (AIDS Healthcare Foundation).<\/p>\n
1. In 2004, two companies were fined by Cal\/OSHA (Grudzen & Kerndt)<\/p>\n
2. OSHA limited by number of enforcement officials (Grudzen & Kerndt).<\/p>\n
VI. What has already been to regulate the porn industry?<\/p>\n
A.Many groups target STDs and use of condoms in the industry.<\/p>\n
1. Cal\/OSHA standards require both condom use and reporting and treatment of STDs by adult actors\/actresses.<\/p>\n
2. California legislators encouraging production companies to use condoms.<\/p>\n
3. Smaller organizations such as Adult Industry Medical Health Care Foundation, which provides counseling and STD testing (Mitchell).<\/p>\n
B. Nothing has really been done about physical and emotional abuse of porn actresses.<\/p>\n
1. The Pink Cross Foundation, put together by Shelley Lubben, supports ex-porn stars who have suffered abuse in the industry. The goal of the organization is to raise awareness.<\/p>\n
VII. What needs to be done about abuse of workers in the porn industry?<\/p>\n
A. \u201cThe crucial step to gaining rights for porn performers is to recognize that it is possible to do sex work by choice, to create and sell pornography ethically, and to lead a healthy and happy life as a sex worker (Mayhem).\u201d<\/p>\n
B. Federal legislation needs to step in, as local officials lack authority (Grudzen & Kerndt).<\/p>\n
1. Federal law to require Custodian of Records (that is already required) to hold documentation of screening tests, condom usage, and a safe, harassment-free work environment in order for films to be distributed.<\/p>\n
IX. Conclusion<\/p>\n
A. The health and safety of porn actresses are constantly at risk, with today\u2019s regulations of the industry.<\/p>\n
B. Regulation by the federal government needs to happen.<\/p>\n
C. Regulation will not only improve the health of women working in the industry, but will also improve society\u2019s stigma surrounding porn.<\/p>\n
