Falls account for 40 % of prolonged hospital stays in patients greater than 65 years old.. Morbidity and Mortality rates increase with falls. Burns (2018) noted that the death rates among 65 year-old age group and older had risen 31% in the last nine years. According to Hays (2018) lack of quick response to call lights was cited as related to 35% of the falls in in elderly patients in the United States (U.S). Patients who are confined to bed often wait to the last minute to use their call light when needing to go to the restroom. Prolonged call light response time can prompt patient to try to ambulate to the restroom on their own due to fear of incontinence. Smith (2017) conducted a retrospective study at two South Central hospitals which concluded that 38 out of 88 patient falls that were documented reported lack or delayed use of their call light.<\/p>\n

Example: Falls are a significant factor in prolonged hospital stays (Calahan, 2016). Falls in the elderly result in increased hospital stays, morbidity and mortality. Walters (2019) noted that elderly hospitalized patients do not like to be a burden, resulting in decreased or delayed call light use. The problem is that elderly patients inconsistently use the call light to ask for assistance in ambulating to the restroom contributing to an increase in falls in inpatient settings. <\/p>\n
