The first of your discussion options involves looking at a possible new entry or disorder for inclusion into the DSM. This requires you to think critically about the nature and definition of mental illness. The area of addiction is also central to this discussion.
The second discussion option will allow you to explore the importance of how society views mental illness and how it may be portrayed in the media. You will look at various ways this is revealed and consider the cultural aspects or influences on mental health issues.

Instructions

Choose one of the following discussion topics (either Option A or Option B) to address in your post in this discussion.

A. Internet Addiction Disorder

Internet Addiction Disorder has been proposed as a new disorder to be included in the DSM. This includes online gaming, social media use, watching online videos, shopping, blogging, and generally reading articles. Critics believe that this is simply a manifestation of other disorders.

Do you believe that Internet Addiction Disorder should be officially included in the DSM? Why or why not?

B. Stigma Related to Psychological Disorder

Historically, there has been much stigma around psychological disorders. A lack of understanding about the disorder, or misinformation about it, is often perpetuated by the media. Think of a character on television, in a book, or in the movies that displays characteristics of a psychological disorder.

How does the story treat this individual?
a. Is the disorder fairly depicted?
b. Is the individual made fun of?
c.
