It can be something as simple as an ear infection or something as catastrophic as bacterial meningitis that can either lead to death or long-term disabilities. Either way, this fear is further exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic since we’ve seen how devastating the effect is on most of the general population. 6 million deaths later, people have every right and reason to remain as cautious as ever and we, as a society, have taken drastic measures to ensure that there’s ongoing disinfection at home and most especially in public places to help stop the spread of the virus. For this project, I felt like I needed a fresh and more positive approach to tackling microbes because most accounts of germs, especially recently, dwell on the awful, negative effects it has on us. I chose this book specifically because of the abundance of information it has about microbes that helped shed some positive light on the role they play in our lives and how we can use this newly obtained information to develop a better relationship with our bodies the micro population within us.

I think it best we start with basic information such as this and move forward from there. Where do our microbes come from? We get them from natural elements present in the atmosphere like water, soil, and the air, but we can also get them from other people as well as we encounter them. As we grow older and get more exposed to different environments, our microbial population is also subject to change depending on what we expose ourselves to. We have to seek a greater diversity when it comes to the microbial population in our bodies because keeping a good diversity of microbes can influence our overall health. We can do that by eating healthy foods that will expose our guts to healthy microbes to keep us healthy or go to a place we’ve never been before to place ourselves in a different environment with a plethora of microbes our bodies might not be exposed to yet.

Let’s talk hygiene and beauty! This is easily one of my favorite chapters in this book because I’ve learned a lot about microbes and the many interactions between them and our bodies that contribute to certain things like our odor and acne. Our body odor is due to the combined effects of our sweat and bacteria. Other than the helpful effects of sweat such as moisturizing our skin and regulating temperature, our sweat contains proteins and hormones that strengthen our skin. This is used by microbes as a source of nutrition, and when they are done feasting off whatever nutrients they can find on our skin, they relieve themselves onto our skin, and that fecal matter releases an aroma that determines how we smell.

Grace Macaspag William Simmons BIOL-2420-51003 A Book Review on The Germ Files by Jason Tetro We have a natural fear of germs, viruses, fungi, and the like because of the known harmful effects they can inflict upon us.
