A reflective essay is an essay in which the writer examines his or her experiences in life. The writer then writes about those experiences, exploring how he or she has changed, developed, or grown from those experiences.

Follow this structure when completing your reflection essays:

Introduction: Reflective essays always have an introduction in which the speaker shares what the overall focus of the reflection will be. An academic writer should be direct in explaining what aspect of his/her experiences she/he will talk about. A thesis statement is a major component of the introduction.

Body: The body of the reflective essay explains how the writer has changed and why the writer has changed.

First, the body explains what caused the writer to change.

For example, if an academic writer is asked to reflect on how he/she improved as a writer over the duration of a writing course, this writer will share the different assignments/lessons and skills taught that made her/him a stronger writer.

Second, a reflective writer must also give examples by using supporting details to describe the change.

For example, if a writer discusses becoming more optimistic in life, then detailed examples should be given of what made this change, such as sharing a specific incident in which the writer took a positive approach to resolving the incident.

Conclusion: In the conclusion of a reflective essay, the writer sums up how she/he has changed and what the writer has learned from those changes. In doing this, the writer will look ahead or look backward.

If looking ahead, the writer shares how he/she thinks the experiences in the essay helped him/her develop better skills/abilities/talents for the writer’s use in the future.

If looking backward, the writer will note how different he or she was in the past by comparing past and future selves to emphasize the difference(s) in skills/abilities/talents.

Reflection Essay Requirements

You must follow the Reflection Essay Structure guidelines above. Failure to follow these structure guidelines will result in a zero score for that essay.

For the Reflection Essay, you will choose a topic you found personally meaningful from Weeks 4, 5, or 6.
