This is the first step in that process!

The goal of this abstract is to help you find a good topic. A good topic is one that is interesting to you, gives you the chance to apply one or more of our ethical theories, has enough scholarly research to support a paper, and is small enough that you can complete the term paper in half a semester.

Your abstract should be 100-200 words, and should include these four items:

A topic that is:

Carefully and narrowly defined

About current-day digital technology

For example, “privacy implications of parents posting their minor children’s photos on Facebook” would be a good topic. By contrast, “Privacy and Facebook,” or “privacy,” would not be good topics for this assignment because they are not narrowly defined. You could write an entire doctoral thesis on either topic, and have enough left over for a book! Similarly, “is war ever justified” is not a good topic for this assignment because it is not about technology.

What ethical theory or theories you will apply (e.g., social contract theory, utilitarianism)

What you expect to show, or learn (e.g., “whether or not social contract theorists consider parents posting their children’s photos ethical”)

The research methods and sources you will use (e.g., examination of peer reviewed literature, industry press, original fieldwork, etc.)

As part of the fourth item, you must find at least three relevant scholarly sources. A scholarly source is one from an academic source–for example, a peer-reviewed journal. Remember, the HU Library is open for virtual business, and the librarians can help you find articles. You can reach out to me as well!

Grading (30 points total):

Each of the four required items: 5 points each, 20 points total

The three scholarly sources are worth 6 points total (1 each for locating a source, 1 each for being scholarly)

Meeting length requirement: 4 points

This is his assignment Criteria for Outline:

The next step toward your term paper is to prepare an outline. The outline will help you organize your thinking and serves as a check to make sure you have all the sources you need. A good outline makes writing a long paper world easier!

There are many, many guides to creating good outlines online. I think -> this <- one is clear, thorough, and helpful. Building from that guide, your outline should include:

A thesis: the argument that you mean to prove.

The major points that you will make to support your thesis.

The sources you need for each of your major points. (If you have fewer than five sources, that is a red flag indicating that your research is probably incomplete.)

A complete bibliography for your sources, in APA format. (Please note that this means not just links to articles!)

As noted in the syllabus, the paper is a minimum of 5,000 words. That is a little over 15 pages in 12-point, double-spaced font. As you are outlining, be sure to ask yourself: is this going to be enough? If not, consider where you can go into greater depth, or where you might be skimming past a part of the argument that deserves more attention.

Please submit your outline through Canvas a .pdf by 11:59 a.m.–one minute before noon–on Sunday, April 3.

Grading:

Present a clear thesis: 10 points

Support the thesis with suitable argument: 30 points

Citations are sufficient for the major points in the argument: 10 points

Complete, correct bibliography: 10 points

First Draft:

The next stage of your term paper is a first draft. This draft is meant to give you the chance to explain your ideas fully. It is also an opportunity for me to give feedback, not just on your argument, but also how you are expressing your argument.

The first draft should be “substantially complete.” That means:

It should have your entire argument. The first draft should not trail off without finishing!

It should be in full APA format, with the exception that you do not need an abstract. This means, in particular, that the paper should have in-text citations and a reference list.

It should be at least 3,000 words long. (Remember that the final paper is to be at least 5,000 words long; the 3,000 word minimum for the first draft allows for you to go back and add more to the argument.)

It is OK if the first draft is missing some material–for example, you might plan on gathering more evidence for certain points. If you know that you intend to add more in certain places, you can add a note saying so.

The most important thing to remember is that the more complete your first draft is, the better the feedback I can give you. Please put as much time in now as possible; it will benefit you later!

Your first draft is due at 11:59 a.m.–one minute before noon–on Sunday, April 17. Please submit your paper through Canvas as a PDF.

Grading:

Everyone who hands in a first draft that meets the requirements above will receive 30 points.

-> This (Links to an external site.) <- is the rubric I will use for the final draft. When I give you your feedback, I will tell you where on that rubric you are so far.

Course Paper Paper Length: 5000 words Abstract Length: 200 words Topic: Whether or not it is ethical to create a deep fake of someone.
