Science as a Process<\/p>\n
When studying the natural world, scientists use a process called the\u00a0scientific method.<\/p>\n
Observations,\u00a0along with previous data, are used to formulate a hypothesis.\u00a0Inductive reasoning\u00a0allows a scientist to combine facts into a\u00a0hypothesis.<\/p>\n
New observations and\/or experiments are carried out in order to test the hypothesis. Through\u00a0deductive reasoning,\u00a0scientists can develop a\u00a0prediction\u00a0of what may occur as a result of the experiment. A good\u00a0experimental design\u00a0includes an\u00a0experimental variable\u00a0and a\u00a0control group.\u00a0Scientists may use\u00a0models\u00a0and model organisms in their experimental design.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0data\u00a0from the experimental and observational results are analyzed, often using statistical methods. The results are often presented in tables or graphs for ease of interpretation.<\/p>\n
A conclusion is made as to whether the results support the hypothesis or do not support the hypothesis.<\/p>\n
The results may be submitted to a scientific publication for review by the scientific community.<\/p>\n
Over time, multiple conclusions in a particular area may allow scientists to arrive at a\u00a0theory\u00a0(or\u00a0principle\u00a0or\u00a0law), such as the cell theory or the theory of evolution.
