Grand Nursing Theory<\/p>\n
Dorothea Orem\u2019s self-care deficit theory is one of the grand theories that can be applied to nursing practice. The theory is composed of interrelated parts that include self-care, self-care deficit, and the nursing system (Alligood, 2017). The theory assumes people should depend on themselves and be responsible for themselves or the members of their families that need care. The theory also makes the assumption that people are distinct individuals and nursing is a form of action based on the interaction between two or more people. Another assumption of the theory is the fact that meeting the universal and developmental self-care requisites is an essential component of primary care prevention and ill health. Moreover, Orem assumes that the knowledge of a person regarding health problems that could arise is essential for the promotion of self-care behaviors. The theory also makes the assumption that an individual learns within a socio-cultural context about the self-care and dependent care behaviors. <\/p>\n
Orem\u2019s theory is employed in the identification of the patient\u2019s needs in which the nurse evaluates the tasks that the patient could perform independently but can no longer perform due to sickness (Alligood, 2017). The nurse will determine whether the patient can maintain effective airway, take sufficient intake of food and eliminate as desired, failure to which the nurse would make interventions geared towards the restoration of function in the patient. The theory is also employed in health education and improvement of healthcare awareness where the nurse identifies the gaps in knowledge and addresses them through health education. The nurse providing care to patients, therefore understands that what he or she is doing is based on the fact that the patient cannot do for himself or herself. The nurse also purposes to help the patient recovery health and perform the activities of daily living independently. <\/p>\n
