This means we have some information that, according to Cook, musical notation (i.e. written music) can not give us. However, since we only have very few recordings, there’s lots we don’t know about Moreschi as well.
How are the limits of musical notation similar to and different than what we can and can’t know about Moreschi’s ‘sound,’ about the aesthetic ideal expressed in his performance? An ‘aesthetic ideal’ in this context means the framework of values that, in Moreschi’s day, govern what counts as beautiful music, ugly music, fine or high-class music, coarse or low-class music, and so on.\u00a0
