6.1 Devotion. Leader Discouragement – Reviewing Nehemiah’s Strategies<\/p>\n
Getting Started<\/p>\n
Nehemiah found that rebuilding the Jerusalem wall was far more difficult and complicated than he expected or imagined. More than the hard labor required, the pervasive discouragement greatly hampered the project. However, Nehemiah did not allow all of that discouragement to undermine the original goal! He exhibited good leadership skills and faced the challenges with resilience (Swindoll, 2006). You can read more about this by finishing the remainder of\u00a0Nehemiah Chapter 4(new tab).<\/p>\n
The chart below outlines the five strategies that Nehemiah used to deal with the widespread discouragement among the wall builders. He used these strategies to refocus the attention of the people away from the sources of their fear, anxiety and discouragement and toward the goal that God had called them to complete. What obstacles do you face that are preventing you from accomplishing your goals? One strategy in the chart below is to \u201cdirect attention to the Lord.\u201d How do we do that? Quite simply, we call to mind the things that the Lord has said (Swindoll, 2006). Here are a couple of examples:<\/p>\n

You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.<\/p>\n

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.<\/p>\n
