The organization is based in North Carolina and operates on a global scale. The main objective of the company is to alleviate hunger and poverty. Therefore, the company constantly partners with other humanitarian organizations to achieve this goal.

The need statement

The Horn of Africa is undergoing one of its worst droughts in recent memory, with over 13 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia facing extreme food insecurity. Thousands of families have left their houses in search of food, water, and pasture in an attempt to survive. Action is needed to assist drought-affected people and communities in surviving the coming months while also assisting them in regaining self-reliance and building resilience against future shocks (King-Okumu et al 2019). Drought affected the Horn of Africa in 2016-2017, but humanitarian aid was ramped up early, saving lives and preventing a horrific catastrophe. WFP and its humanitarian partners have been warning that if the international community does not respond quickly, the current drought will prove terrible. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, three consecutive seasons of below-average precipitation have resulted in a persistent worsening in food security (Senbeta & Megersa, 2019). This drought has the potential to become one of the biggest climate-related disasters in recent history in the Horn of Africa. According to the latest estimates, the rainy season from March to May will be normal to below-average. If this season fails, an unusual (in the previous 40 years) run of four below-normal rainfall seasons will occur, resulting in significant rises in food insecurity. The drought wreaks havoc on women and children, increasing the risk of gender-based violence (GBV), sexual exploitation and abuse, and restricting children’s access to school. Child marriage has allegedly increased in some areas, with families marrying off young girls to reduce their resources demands and maybe gain money for food and other requirements. Families in certain areas have ceased sending females to school in favor of boys because they cannot pay the school fees.

Goal Statement and Objectives

Seed Programs International is looking for a grant to aid numerous African regions that have been suffering from hunger. Drought in the target region is no more a scars event but a chronic phenomenon brought on by global warming and climate change. Climate change has significantly affected the rainy season making the season less predictable, and when it does arrive, it is more severe and catastrophic. People are battling over increasingly scarce resources like water and good land as a result, and many are forced to flee their communities to avoid internal conflict and find sustenance. The worst damaged are communities near ethical and clan borders, such as Soyama and Moyale. According to World Vision, there are 200 million hungry people in Africa.

The objective of the international seed program is to address the short-term and long-term issues of drought in the region.

Improving sustainability by making the region self-reliant.

The objective is to find long-term solutions to the issue. The approach towards sustainability is significant because of the effects of coronavirus and global warming, which have harmed output in the region and increased reliance due to unemployment. Gardens give much-needed food and income. Therefore, our approach will provide a safe haven and a means of subsistence to those who have been forced from their homes. Seed Programs International works with different organizations that already have a pool of resources to ensure this group’s investment in good seeds, better water access, agriculture training, and shared supplies provide the best results — one water storage system can help 50 families extend their producing season. The project develops local leaders through vegetable sales and offers women economic power, which benefits the entire community. Addressing this issue is important since most of these countries rely on agriculture as the main export product.

Project Narrative

SPI has a tried-and-true technique for obtaining high-quality seed and ensuring that it reaches those in need. Our partners recognize that the seed must be good after all of the effort it takes to get seed to those who need it in politically and geographically difficult circumstances. After all the effort required to prepare the land and raise crops by folks who are already frail, the poor seed might cause more harm than good. SPI employs a unique six-step process to ensure that the seed we deliver is excellent.

The first step is seed acquisition

The procurement of donated seeds is the first step in the SPI process. SPI’s board of directors and employees use their excellent industry connections to get donated seeds that would otherwise be thrown away. This seed was donated by some of the world’s largest seed firms with the understanding that it would be utilized for humanitarian causes. SPI enables a profitable business strategy based on recycling and corporate investment.

Seed selection

Choosing the right seed to sow in destination nations is crucial to ensure the success of smallholder farmers. SPI’s seed experts assess the temperature and geography of the destination site and propose seeds that will produce a wide range of crops.

Testing

SPI evaluates its seed to assure that it will grow and produce in the countries where it will be distributed. SPI collaborates with recognized seed laboratories and privately owned that conduct germination and vitality tests. Seeds that have been examined and found to be of insufficient quality for worldwide distribution are either given away or dumped. SPI makes certain that the bulk of seed from corporate partners is put to good use.

Packaging

Seeds are packaged in separate garden packets with many languages written on them by SPI. On the back of each package, instructions are given on how to plant each type of seed, how long it takes for the seeds to germinate, and how long it takes for the plants to grow. Packets have been produced in any language if needed (Seed Programs International, 2022). End users can simply carry seeds because of the small container. Shipments also included other educational resources.

Shipping

Packaging and transporting the seed is a vital service SPI provides for its humanitarian partners. SPI is in charge of box packing, testing documentation, and import paperwork. Although flying is the preferred mode of delivery for SPI, shipping by personal courier might be more cost-effective. The importance of good travel conditions cannot be overstated. SPI attempts to provide the most cost-effective transportation option while maintaining the seed’s quality.

Distribution and oversight

Seeds are delivered to humanitarian groups worldwide, where it is supplied to individuals in need by their humanitarian partners. Family, school, and community gardens have been established and are doing well. Seeds must be distributed each year to maintain these little farming operations prospering and producing veggies. SPI continues to assist groups and farmers all across the world. We can assist partners who want to improve local self-sufficiency through seed preservation or locate local/regional sources of excellent seeds. The organization aims to collaborate with local organizations to help in the distribution process. The oversight will ensure that goods are delivered to the affected families.

References

International, S. (2022). Our Six-Step Approach – Seed Programs International.
