The relevance of the nursing profession comes in as a bridge between the patients and the other health care professionals such as physicians since the nurses spend most of their time with the patients. This paper entails a comprehensive discussion of a nursing theory that applies to the contemporary interventions and the link between the nursing theory and evidence-based change models in improving the healthcare delivery system and the patients’ clinical outcomes.

Nursing Theory

A theory is a hypothetical idea about what may work effectively in a particular scenario based on the circumstances. Nursing theories entail different perspectives of patient care initiatives to better patient care and the prognostic outcome of diseases. In addition, client satisfaction is also an important consideration, hence the need to put in place care modalities driven by respect to humanity and prioritization of the patient’s best interest. The approach ensures that all the interventions provided have a high benefit to risk ratio, promoting a significant improvement in the clinical outcome and the quality of life.

Theory of Human Caring

The theory is centered on how nurse practitioners express care to their clients. Besides scientific knowledge and the professional skills acquired during training, humanistic aspects of care are also relevant in nursing interventions since they are a significant determinant of the approach a nurse employs while interacting with the patients (Ortiz, 2021). For instance, diseases like cancer can be associated with social stigmatization. However, a nurse that exhibits the humanistic aspect of the profession, a reflection of the human caring theory, can effectively interact with the patients that have undergone complete or partial mastectomies and determine their clinical needs. The theory of human caring emphasizes that nursing is centered on preventing diseases, promoting wellness, caring for the patients, and ensuring the restoration of health (Ortiz, 2021). All these can only be achieved if a humanistic approach drives the nursing interventions and interaction between the nurse practitioners and patients.

There are 10 Watson’s carative factors that are included in the theory of human caring. These are; formulation of a human value system, hope, and faith installation, nurturing professional and patient sensitivity, creating an aid-trust rapport, promoting freedom of expression, application of a problem-solving approach for decision-making, facilitating learning, creation of a supportive environment, promoting gratification, and allowing for phenomenological perspectives (Ortiz, 2021). These carative factors are implemented in the project by creating a patient-comfort-centered care environment for post-mastectomy patients. Watson’s model applies the same approach as a scientific study process: assessment, planning, intervening, and evaluation.

The contemporary nursing interventions are a result of the concepts introduced through nursing theories. The interventions focus on the prioritization of patient wellness, leading to improved clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. The care interventions go hand in hand with the best approach that can lead to a better quality of life in improving healthcare delivery, as influenced by the evidence-based practice (EBP) guidelines.

Evidence-based Change Model

EBP provides the most effective interventions based on the study findings that a particular approach is relevant for. The evidence is gathered from the results of studies conducted to determine the efficacy of specific models of care used in the healthcare setting. The John Hopkins Nursing EBP (JHNEBP) is an important problem-handling initiative used in clinical judgment in conjunction with other tools relevant in the environment (Friesen et al., 2017). The type of problems directs the application of the change model.

Change Model- Johns-Hopkin’s nursing evidence-based practice model

The JHNEBP model is created specifically to meet a nurse practitioner’s needs and applies a three-step approach called PET; Practice concern, Evidence, and final Translation. The objective is to ensure that the latest study finding concerning the interventions about a specific clinical concern is incorporated into the care practices. The translation entails substituting the current intervention with the latest approach that results in a better clinical outcome. The John Hopkins University introduced the nursing evidence-based change model.

Synthesis of Evidence-based Change Model

The JHNEPB model has been applied in quality improvement studies to arrive at the most appropriate outcome for addressing a clinical concern. Higher learning institutions in Nepal consider background training on the JHNEPB model as part of the mandatory requirements for the undergraduate curriculum (Friesen et al., 2017). The American Association of Nursing colleges has also incorporated JHNEBP programs in the DNP curriculum. Moreover, the JHNEBP guidelines are used as directives in problem-solving in the United States nursing homes and geriatric centers.

Summary

Problem-solving interventions are vital tools for any organization and are practical even in the healthcare system. The JHNEBP focuses on improving the quality of care provided by a nurse practitioner. The interventions are scanned through the problem, evidence, and the transition phases, to arrive at a care plan that is most appropriate for a particular setting based on evidence.

Conclusion

The JHNEBP model and the human caring theory support the purpose of the DPI project since the change model directs the application of the best intervention based on evidence, and the nursing theory focuses on the provision of nursing interventions that prioritize the patients, wellness. The nursing theory supports the change model by focusing on the patient’s best interest, and the JHNEBP model supports the theory by solving the problem by providing the best intervention.

References

Friesen, M. A., Brady, J. M., Milligan, R., & Christensen, P.
