It is vital to engage colleagues in the change process as early as possible and to make sure that as far as possible the plans dovetail with their own values and beliefs. Consultation is therefore a critical element of the successful change counselor’s toolkit, yet many therapists have little experience of it, relying instead on emails, traditional meeting formats, and other ritualized processes\u00a0(2017).
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0At some point in your career, you may begin working with a client who challenges your ability to provide compassionate counseling. In some cases, it may be possible for you and the client to work together and overcome this difficulty. In other cases, providing a referral to another mental health professional may best serve both you and the person you\u2019re working with, after consultation with your peers or supervisor.\u00a0You may find the decision to terminate therapy, even by providing a referral to another counselor, a difficult one. You might be unsure when it\u2019s ideal to continue trying to work with your client and when referral may be a better decision. This decision should be made after consultation with peers and supervisors.
