Choose at least two pieces of literature from our contemporary society. They should be recent. If you are focusing on a long work, such as a novel, pick shorter selections of no more than about 1000-1500 words that are especially helpful to you.\u00a0
In one discussion post:
At the very top, list the cultural identity you are examining. (This should be the same as last week’s assignment). post your selections.
Post each full text – the complete poem, or complete snippet from a larger work. \u00a0
For each text include information such as the author, year of publication, and place of publication. Since you are using literature to analyze our contemporary society, your chosen pieces should have been produced recently by people who are members of\u2013or at least reflecting on\u2013our contemporary culture.
In a second post, write a 2-3 paragraph analysis of what your selected pieces of literature have to tell us about your chosen identity. As with the Art History analysis, focus on questions such as:
What do these pieces of literature imply about what it means to be “x”?
What assumptions or preconceptions about “x’s” are implicit in the stories or poems?
How might we be affected by literature that portrays being “x” the way these pieces of literature do?
How is being “x” different than being “y,” according to what you find in these pieces of literature?
