A dossier is literally a file that traces the origins of the artwork. This includes things like who created this work of art? Who did they create the artwork for? What art medium was used to create the piece (i.e., watercolors, oil, chalk, sculptural materials etc.). A provenance is a term that gives the chronology of the ownership, custody, or location of a historical object. The primary purpose of tracing the provenance of an object or entity is normally to provide contextual and circumstantial evidence for its original production or discovery, by establishing, as far as practicable, its entire history, especially the sequences of its formal ownership, custody, and places of storage.

Essay Content:

Pick one (1) popular protest artist from the 1960s (and beyond) on the table below (the list is a mix of painters, pop artists, musicians, and photographers). After you pick your artist then you will research their body of work and PICK TWO (2) of their pieces of art that you are particularly drawn to (it doesn’t have to be their most famous pieces, however, it is much easier if you do).
Research that artist and pick 2 of his works of art that you like (can be pictures, paintings, sculptures, etc.).
Copy the 2 pieces of artwork that you chose and insert them at the beginning of your commentary (like what you did for the Progressive Era assignment). If it is a poet, then please include a link to the poems that you will be analyzing.
Then you will write a dossier, which is simply a description or narrative of the artist and the pieces of art that you selected? Here are some ideas on what you can include for (the idea is to give a full account of the artists and the artwork you chose).

Who is the artist?
When and why did he become an artist?
Who were his main artistic influences?
Where did he go to art school?
What is his general philosophy on the art?
What methods or techniques does he use to paint or create art (impressionists, modernists etc.)?).
What is the title of each of the pieces of artwork?
When were they completed?
Where were they completed?
Where can you find the pieces of artwork today?
What is your opinion of the artwork?
What is the world’s opinion of the artwork?
What is your interpretation and opinion of the artwork?

NOTE: You do not have to answer all the questions that I listed above. Just be sure to describe the artwork in as detailed a fashion as you can. PLEASE USE YOUR OWN WORDS AND DON’T COPY, CUT, AND PASTE YOUR NARRATIVE INTO THE ASSIGNMENT BECAUSE IT DOES GO THROUGH AN AUTHENTICITY CHECK.

Essay Instructions:

You can write one paragraph on the artist, and a paragraph each on the pieces of art for a total of 3 paragraphs (each paragraph should be a minimum of 6 sentences).

Sentences should be typed with 1 1/2″ spaces between them.
Use Microsoft Word ONLY and Arial 14″ font

-List of Protest Artists to Choose from (musicians, painters, photographers, writers, etc.):
Jacob Lawrence

Peter Blake

Roy Lichtenstein

Andy Warhol

Bob Adelman

Bob Hudson

Bob Dylan

Peter, Paul & Mary

James “Spider” Martin

Joni Mitchell

Buffalo Springfield

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

Mae Stevens

Carol Summers

Robert Rauschenberg

Bob Fitch

Bernie Boston

Nick Ut

Eddie Adams

Sal Vader

James Karales

Dana Pardue

David Bailey

Ernest Withers

John Filo

Joseph Loew

Moreta Sleet, Jr

Leonard Cohen

Joan Baez

Judy Collins

Bob Seager

James Taylor

Phil Ochs

Simon & Garfinkel

Cat Stevens

Gordon Lightfoot

Carole King

Joan Armatrading

Billy Bragg

Tracy Chapman

John Lennon

Kris Kristoferrsen

John Denver

Ai Wei Wei

Keith Horing

Diego Rivera

Nan Golding

Void One

Kehinde Wiley

Kanye West

Tupac Shakur

Rage Against the Machine

Tom Paxton

J.
