Your assignment is to build a 3-5 page document using all of the sources and commentary you have produced over the last three weeks.
Your comprehensive analysis should inform us about the content, application, and reception of your chosen identity or identities in our contemporary American culture.
Content: what are the elements that make up the identity or identities? For example, what does it mean to be “feminine,” to be “Muslim American,” or to be “middle class”? What important contrasts are there with other identities, such as “feminine” vs “masculine”, “Muslim American” vs “atheist,” or “middle class” vs “upper class”?
Application: who counts as having this identity? Are there disputes over who counts? Does everyone agree? Does the identity apply to different people depending on who we ask?
Reception: how do people who do not have this identity tend to respond to people who do have this identity? Is your chosen identity considered enviable? Scary? Strong? Weak? What is the place of this identity in our broader culture?
Use multiple sources from the categories of art, literature, and music as your evidence to support your analysis of your target identity or identities. You do not have to use every single source that you’ve collected over the previous three weeks. Instead, use the sources that best illustrate the points that you want to make about the content, application, and reception of your target identity.
You may structure your 3-5 page analysis in many different ways. It might look like a typical essay or research paper, but you might choose to adopt a different structure or presentation format if you think that will better communicate what you have discovered about your target identity.
