Running Head: Doc McStuffins

The media is another big source of correspondence alongside television, radio, daily newspaper and the internet. In this manner, television is a standout amongst the most depended upon media. Media is a prevailing power in the United States and around the world (Armato,2012). This is why I selected a television show because television represent and communicate such a large number of various things, for example, such as a diverse group of females and males. Television program and movies betray diverse messages for us to interrupt. Some concepts that the media analysis seek to explain the reason behind the kind of message that is generally given by the television with respect to the specific television program that I will talk about is Disney Doc Mc Stuffins.

Doc McStuffins is a 30-minute show that futures Dottie (Doc) who is made up as a cartoon character who is six-year-old girl and wants to become a doctor like her mother. She can talk to stuff animals and she can also fix the stuff animals and toys with the help from her toy friends and sometimes the help from her mother. Dottie (Doc) also has an enchanted toy stethoscope to communication with the toys. She is an African American girl with short dark brown hair in two ponytails with a purple headband in the middle of her head. Most the time she wears a lab coat over her long-sleeved purple and white striped shirt. Doc also has a brother who name is Donny and an adoptive sister name Maya. She sings songs and have certain quotes she use like “I have a diagnosis” (disneyjr.disney.com). With that being said I feel like this show has a big impact on young girl’s confidence and also let them know they could be anything they want to be. Doc McStuffins also demonstrate a loving, caring family environment which is different from societies views.

The Television show that I chose to analysis is Disney Jr., Doc McStuffins.  DocMcStuffins television show shows us more than one way to do gender by cartoon charters. Currently in today’s society children are exposed to cartoons at an early age. The gender, class and race are influenced in their development of children’s beliefs and attitudes about gender roles, class, and racial groups. Representation of race such as minority cartoon charters and females have improved over the several past years, stereotypical and racially biased portrayals of females and racial minority groups remain.

Another reason why I chose to do the television show Doc McStuffins is because it is based on an African American family and Doc’s mother is a full-time doctor who works to support her family and her dad who name is Marcus and he stays home and take care of the children. In Doc McStuffins the character portrayals, stereotypes, challenges to traditional stereotypes, and the intersecting role of race, gender, and class on the representations of the characters are explored in this analysis. African American women are usually not portrayed in television in a positive way. For example, most of the time they are portrayed as drug addicts, homeless, bad attitudes, basically struggling or hustling to survive. In Doc McStuffins her mother who name is Dr. Maisha McStuffins is a Pediatrician. She is a loving, caring and compassionate mother and pediatrician who always treat her with patients by being friendly. Dottie who is known as Doc wants to be a doctor like her mother. When Doc puts on her stethoscope her toys come alive. When she gives checkups she sometimes run into situations with her toys and when she gets stuck with fixing her toys her mother always gives lend a help in hand to help fix her toys.

In today’s society and mostly in the media you mainly see doctors portrayed as males. Because of stereotypes in society most doctors have been seen as unemotional, authoritative and objective with is related to males. On the other hand, women are seen as nurses who are caring and subjective. But the views of doctors and nurses are changing slowly and when you watch Doc McStuffins she is breaking barriers and stereotypes through cartoon charters. When children watch the show Doc McStuffins I believe that they will grow up with a different outlook or see a model on what a doctor looks like. This can help with gender and cultural expectations because Doc McStuffins is breaking a lot of stereotypes. When I was growing up you didn’t see black cartoon charters as doctors or princess. For example, Cinderella, Snow White and Barbie was seen a Caucasians. Therefore, I feel like the racial stereotyping from previous years are changing slowing with the help of shows and movies like Princess and the frog and Doc McStuffins. Our society has had these stereotypes for certain occupations, race and genders. Society have us believing that men can only do certain roles such as being a doctor. The media also play a huge part in the way female and males are portrayed so I feel like it’s the parent’s reasonability to educate their children by letting them know that they could be anything they want to be. in Disney Doc McStuffins shows that I watched they have all different kind of real life scenarios that kids experience when they get sick or have accidents while playing outside. One of the episode I watched was about her brother dog Fetchin’ Findo. He started to malfunction by not fetching his bone, so she takes him in for a checkup and finds out he has sand in his nose. Doc helps out all toys and animals with kindness no matter what the gender, race, or background. She demonstrates no matter what the situation is and no matter who it is you should always treat everyone the same. In the show it’s like her toys represent different genders and race and they all play a hug part in her medical practice.

Taking everything into account, Doc McStuffins can help young girls of all race in light of the fact that for them their good examples are typically their mothers. Along these lines, as they watch this tv show it can give them a feeling of their identity and what they can be when they grow up. The media can have a big impact on children in the present society and it can contain a variety of different images of gender and give distinctive messages about a person identity. The media has all different types of perceptions of gender roles and also can have stereotypes for gender, race, and culture.
