Molecular Genetics

I came alone to Houston eleven years ago. I stayed with a kind, beautiful, elegant, and altruistic lady. She was like my mother. I didn’t have any family member in the city. At that time, I suffered culture shock. Spanish is my mother tongue. It was really difficult to be alone but she was there for me even in my cold nights when I cried. She motivated me every time in order to accomplish my dreams with an atonish bright light. Once she told me “You can be who you want, but if you want it. Visualize the person you want to be”. Suddenly, at the end of summer she was diagnosted with pancreatic cancer in phase four. It was a difficult time not only for her but for her caregivers too. We fought with hope until the end. When that happened; I read many books as I could. I wished to have the treatment for the silent enemy which is cancer. I do believe that with our DNA we could reach many cures for several pathologies. Molecular genetics is a big step in order to accomplish those challenges.

I do have interest in the program for several reasons such as that scientists can discover new genetics links for certain diseases, for genetic evidence over unsolved cases, and to discover characteristics that are pass from parents to offspring and structural alterations that could result in human evolution.

The first reason for genetic links for certain diseases such as cancer, HIV, Alzheimer’s or any mental pathology. For example, genetic testing that is being use to find the right dose of certain medicines such as antidepressants that are used to treat some mental pathologies. Moreover, the gene structure could help us to find the serum vaccine for virus like the recently COVID-19 that is a pandemic issue that is affecting us not only in health but in economic, sociological, and political areas.

The second reason is for genetic evidence over unsolved cases. How many cold cases we do have in our city? How many victims? Where are those criminals? We could help many victims in order to give them justice. For example, the Houstonian eleven year’s old boy case who was stabbed twenty times on way home from school. The HPD only had two suspects and with the DNA on the knife they found the murder. With genetic evidence we could find the responsible of those horrible acts. Indeed, we could save people not only for diseases but also for criminals that are outside walking free on the street waiting for the next victim.

The third reason is the characteristic that are passed from parents to offspring and in time it could have alterations (mutations) that could lead an evolution of our species.  For example, the genetic mutation of the hemoglobin gene HbS is relatively protected against malaria.

My career goal is to be a scientist who understands the Molecular Genetic Field and Neurology. I’m fascinated in how the genetic information is transcribed and translated. I had been taking Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology sciences that’s what makes me feel passion in health. Moreover, I had volunteered five years ago in MD Anderson’s Cancer Center in the International Area. My main role was relieved patient and caregiver anxiety through conversation, welcomed visitors, and provided service excellence. I learned that volunteers play an essential role. I contributed to MD Anderson’s heart.

Also, as a motivated student completing Associates in Science Degree at HCC well-trained in Texas Curriculum Core. I participated in political campaigns in order to contribute to a better city, state, and country with a democratic system. Excellent relationship-building, analytical and communication skills.

In my work experience I create a consistent and positive customer experiences through proactive management of team activities and store operations. Skillfully monitor and adjust processes to meet changing demand, increase efficiency and boost revenue. Deliver exceptional leadership to all employees and ready to use education to positively impact our society by teaching them about current events.

Moreover, I participated in hand with the Greater Northside  Management District, Constables Precinct Number 6, and McDonald’s Restaurant in organized fundraising events for the community in order to have a safe neighborhood after the tragic death of the kid who was stabbed twenty times.

I can discover many fields in science but never as the amazing role in genetics. The true behind the gen. I had experienced and knowledge issues in life but there are many subjects that I have to seek, analyze, and discover to become a better professional and human being.  Once my mother told me” You can be who you want, but if you want it. Visualize the person that you want to be.” I visualize myself to become a scientist in Molecular Genetic Technology. I love challenges and being in the program is a challenge. I have a dream to accomplish.
