The film argues that hip hop was originally about political resistance to exploitation, but for a variety of reasons, it became overtly violent, sexist, and homophobic. In one paragraph each, discuss the role that (1) government policy during the Reagan-Bush era, pay attention to this– this is not about the Bronx expressway era the music industry (the majors), and (3) American ideals of masculinity and how they affect men of color, had to do with the transition of hip hop from political to problematic.
