Unit 2 Discussion: Humanities Disciplines

Before starting this discussion, be sure you have read the lecture, watched the video from the lecture, and read the required chapter readings for this unit. You will need to have a solid understanding of the relationship between culture and the arts, the importance of critical response, and knowledge of the various disciplines within the humanities.

Once you are prepared to do so, please address the following questions as you formulate your initial post for this discussion:

  • What discipline in the humanities do you feel has historically been the most important in the influence of a culture? Why? Identify and explain at least one result from this influence.
  • What artist or artists have had the greatest impact on the arts?
  • According to research, what do you believe to be the most defining moment in the history of the arts? Identify the time period and discuss what was happening at that time and place that may have contributed to the production of their work.
  • What are some modern examples of how the arts are reflected or influenced by culture? Discuss at least two examples of your own and include one example from the lecture video. Clearly explain the arts/culture relationship for each of your examples in order to convey a successful understanding.

Be sure to include specific examples and elaborate on your comments as detailed in the Discussion Forum Requirements. This forum should be considered a formal writing assignment in addition to a class discussion. Include terms from your textbook. Research (outside of the required course readings) is required, so be sure to document your resources.

Discussion Forum Requirements:

  1. Always provide information to support your comments, including textbook material and researched material.
  2. Analyze your responses in relationship to course-related learned material (terminology and concepts).
  3. Continue to review the Discussion Forums throughout the term, and be sure to respond to “reply” posts.
  4. Make sure anything you post contains only logical and relevant arguments to the issue at hand. It should contain no judgmental, emotionally charged, accusatory, or inflammatory language. Remember, it is not only what you say, but how you say it.
  5. You are required to use outside sources and research when developing your discussion posts; as such, you also need to properly cite your sources in each post.

Please note that you must avoid plagiarism when posting your discussion responses. All discussion postings must be written in your own words! Simply copying and pasting someone else’s words in your discussion post will not be accepted and will be viewed as plagiarism.
