This discussion question prepares you for the Week 4 assignment for the review of the literature. This discussion question addresses the following course objectives:
1. Perform in the role of the BSN-prepared nurse in the research process.
3. Locate credible, published peer-reviewed research reports using online library databases.
6. Report a brief review of the literature on a current practice problem.
For this discussion question, you will visit the ECPI Online Library and search, download, print, and read three current (in the last 5 years) research reports on one topic of interest from your personal nursing practice. The three research reports will form the basis of your Week 4 Assignment: Brief Review of Literature. The 3 reports should all be on the same topic.
Examples of topics of interest (choose only 1 area):
- Hand Hygiene
- Infection Prevention
- Diabetes Education
- Preventing medication errors
- Effectiveness of different dressing changes
After obtaining your three research reports, double-check that they are actually reports of a research study conducted by the authors. If the article does not state that it was a research study it may not really be a true research study report.
If you have a question about an article you found, ask the instructor before proceeding.
Check the research reports for these major sections:
- Abstract that states it was a research study.
- Introduction
- Background (literature review)
- Protection of Human Subjects/IRB approval
- Methods
- Results (What was statistically significant? Provide the statistics.)
- Limitations
- Discussion
- Conclusion/Application to Practice
Write 4 paragraphs:
- An introductory paragraph to the practice problem you are investigating in the three research studies.
- One paragraph summary for each of the research studies
- APA references and in-text citations. If you’re unsure how to correctly format the APA references, please check this site (Links to an external site.).
- If you are unsure of what information should be included in a summary of a research report, read this.
- You may be wondering what to include in a research summary. Well, here is the list of vital information that must be included in a research summary. 1. Research design 2. Research question(s) 3. Sample size and main characteristics, location; sampling method 4. Results including the statistical answer to the research question. Include the p values for statistically significant results. (Write the statistics in your summary. You’ll find these in the Results Section). 5. Limitations to the study 6. Application to nursing practice or the problem you are interested in solving.
All of the summaries must be in your own words, no direct quotes.
All of the summaries must be from the ENTIRE article, not just the abstract.
