PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Post 3 (Integrating Values & Career/ Academic Goals)

Answer the following three questions based upon your short term plans- either Academic or Career. Those selecting to focus on Academic goals are are hoping to go on to graduate or professional school immediately after graduation (e.g. MA, MS, JD, MBA, medical school). Those selecting career plan to pursue positions in their field that serve as stepping stones to your eventual career goals.

Your post title should reflect your choice in what you will focus on for your Professional Development Posts throughout the semester; ideally it remains the same. Example…Nancy Smith – Academics; Reena Floyd – Occupation. Each answer should be approximately 200 words.

  1. What values in your life are important to you? (1 Possible Point)

  2. How can apply these values to the Career or Academic focused goals you outlined in the previous discussion? (1 Possible Point)

  3. Discuss any values or important priorities that you may have to negotiate when trying to achieve your Career or Academic goals? (1 Possible Point)

Question: What values in your life are important to you?

Establishing values are personal characteristics that help to motivate and guide our beliefs, attitudes and or behavior. Integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and leadership are five main values I consider important. These values are not only a reflection of character but also the foundation of personal morals and work ethics. Values as such represent a status of class and professionalism that is both desired and beneficial in one’s personal, social and work life.

Question: How can apply these values to the Career or Academic focused goals you outlined in the previous discussion?

As a future senior juvenile probation officer, it is necessary that I present myself in a professional manner while also demonstrating proper work ethics among clients, colleagues and associates as it is not only a key factor to achieving career goals and promotions but also a reflection of my personal character, morals and standards.  Applying these values throughout any work force provides exceptional service to customers while implementing structure and order among companies and personnel.

Question: Discuss any values or important priorities that you may have to negotiate when trying to achieve your Career or Academic goals?

In addition to the five main values mentioned above it is also important to develop patience and perseverance when pursuing career goals. With the rising of case loads, work stressors and personal circumstances ; it is vital that all professionals grasp the understanding, level of tolerance and endurance required to manage difficult task and or circumstances. By mastering theses values overtime will produce a foundation of transparency and simplicity helping to decrease one’s frustration and irritation. 1. What values in your life are important to you? (1 Possible Point)
The values in life that are important to me are being intentional with God, family, financial and time freedom as well. There are so many people chasing the dream to be with a company for a 9-5 job. I think that is a set up for destruction. Why join the rat race when you can make your life a journey of your own. The pandemic has woken many up to come to a realization that they did not enjoy their life before doing it the way society says it has to be.
  2. How can apply these values to the Career or Academic focused goals you outlined in the previous discussion? (1 Possible Point)
I think staying on track and being firm to what you believe and where you want to be can help you not settle for a career or spot in life you don’t want to be in. Doing life for things that are not materialistic is important. Having goals is good but why try to get items that won’t give you any happiness.
  3. Discuss any values or important priorities that you may have to negotiate when trying to achieve your Career or Academic goals? (1 Possible Point)

I think the only one I would have to negotiate are the fact that I refuse to work sunday as that is my sabbath and I also think that the pay grade is negotiable no matter when level you’re on while entering. There is nothing you have to settle for but it is all negotiable. Reply
