Team Development Assignment

For this team-based assignment (1 paper per team) you will need to take a step back and consider your team’s performance over the past semester. In essence, I would like you to choose several key course principles and apply them to your team.

Directions

Required component: Use the Schwartz model’s 3 Ps (Performance, Process, Personal) that we discussed during Residency Week and diagnose your group on these three dimensions. You might also find it helpful to use other aspects of Schwartz’s model as part of the “buffet” component below, but definitely include the 3 Ps. How did your group do on these 3 dimensions and how could it have done better? How can you track growth/change over time, including any stumbling blocks?

Buffet component: In addition to the 3Ps, which you are to use as the framework/structure for the paper, also strategically choose other course concepts and readings to anchor your analysis. What aspects of the course were most important for your group? Which readings/concepts “struck a nerve” for you collectively? The more clearly you can link course concepts and readings to your team’s experiences, the better your grade will be. I’m giving you wide latitude here so that you can choose the topics that are most important and relevant to your team.

Keep in mind a considerable theme in your paper should be about the long-term development of your team, not just atemporal insights from here and there.

Note on paper structure: you basically have two options:

  1. Discuss the 3Ps first and separately, then move on to other course topics in the “buffet” section.
  2. OR Use the 3Ps as an overarching framework for the whole paper, interweaving the “buffet” topics within that framework. If you go this route, make sure to clearly and overtly label the other topics covered.

Other things to keep in mind:

  • Please upload as a Word document, not a pdf (to facilitate feedback and grading process).
  • Your paper must be between 3 and 4 single-spaced pages of 12 point font. Strive to be thorough yet concise.
  • There is NO NEED to go over the suggested page limits! Your grade will not improve by writing a longer paper than what is suggested. If you write more than the suggested amount in a first draft, you might find it useful to edit down/simplify that draft. This reflects an important skill in business writing – being able to convey rich, complex information crisply and convincingly.
  • It should be written in prose form. You may use a text or bulleted format for limited portions, keeping in mind that it will be evaluated on the above criteria. Therefore, make sure that any bulleted material is clearly explained; we need to see evidence of your team having fully thought through these issues.
  • Include the name / number of your group in the filename of the document you upload.
  • Be thoughtful and reflective.
  • Ground your paper in observations, analyses, and class concepts.
  • It should be well-organized with appropriate use of headings to demarcate sections.
  • Please include a title page and take care that the formatting/presentation of the document looks good.
  • Avoid plagiarism: be sure to cite course readings (and any other external sources) when drawing from them.
  • You do NOT need to include a separate reference page at the end UNLESS you cite something outside the course readings, in which case you can just list that/those. Anything in the course readings you can simply cite within your text but does not need bibliographic info at the end.
