Case Study: Pricing the EpiPen

Overview

This is a group assignment that has two main parts:

  • Part 1: Written Response
  • Part 2: Feedback (Discussion)

You will be graded both on the quality of your written response (Part 1) and the SWOT analysis you provide in the Case Study Discussion (Part 2). (Refer to the Case Study Discussion for more information.)

This assignment is worth a total of 100 points. A maximum of 85 points will be awarded for your group’s case analysis. A maximum of 15 points will be awarded for the quality of feedback you provide to a minimum of one other team.

Part 1

Read Harvard Business Review Case: Pricing the EpiPen: This is going to sting, Harvard Business School, (See the syllabus for the link to purchase/access the case study). Address the over arching question at the end of the case: What do you recommend Heather Bresch do next? Why?

As a team, craft your response. Be sure to cover the pertinent issues and try to use the theoretical concepts and frameworks provided in your text. The frameworks do not have one-to-one correspondence with reality but help us to see the broader picture. It may be helpful to think of yourselves as industry consultants. For this part of the case analysis each group is to complete the following:

  • Define the problem(s). Ask yourself what the critical issues are that stakeholders in the case are confronted with and need to solve.
  • Identify the alternative(s). There is no single right answer to addressing the issue. Identify the best possible solutions – report on 2-3 you’ve seriously considered. Use all data available to you.
  • Choose and support an alternative. Of the 2-3 solutions, pick one you are putting forth as your main recommendation. Justify why this one is the most appropriate. Rely on text material, personal experience, and secondary and primary data as appropriate.

To get started, consider the following questions:

  1. What changes, if any, should Mylan make to its pricing policy? Is there a better way to structure discounts?
  2. Does the variation in price across countries seem reasonable? What would happen if Mylan were to make its prices more consistent?

These questions are prompts. Do not answer the case in a question and answer format.
