Learning Journal #4: Experiencing Mindfulness

This is one of your assigned learning journal entries.  While you should complete it this lesson, the learning journal entries are submitted in two batches, the first in Lesson 7, the second in Lesson 15, per Course Schedule.

Over the course of 3 days, for 15 minutes each day, engage in a mindfulness practice.  Choose mindful eating, or observing the breath (these are described in the Lesson).  Doing this over a 3-day period will give you some continuity of experience.  This will help you figure out what mindfulness really means, what approach may work best for you, and what potential benefits you may reap.

For your journal entry, describe what the experience was like, including any aftereffects.  Anchor your description in some sort of conceptual framework regarding the workings of the mind, the nature of attention, and the overall purpose of meditative mindfulness practices.  Two of the assigned readings will help you to develop a conceptual framework: 1) The Power of Now by Tolle Chapter 1, and 2) Mindfulness and Business by Guillen and Ribera. Remember, mindfulness meditation, perhaps particularly for a beginner, is not necessarily immediately calming.  It might be, but – for example – it might also be a bit frustrating.  Don’t worry about what type of experience you have.  Simply attempt to faithfully describe your experience, and attempt to anchor this in the context of a conceptual framework.

450 to 500 words; #words in parenthesis at end of answer; references don’t count against word limits.
