This week we will discuss two creative works—a story by Alistaire MacLeod (page 317) an essay by Richard Selzer (page 382). Read both creative works at least once (probably more!) before writing your initial post. Your purpose here is not to write creatively, but to think critically.
1. How did these authors use literary conventions effectively? You may have to analyze the theme or other literary elements of the creative work first, so you can put your response in context. Use specific examples, direct quotes, and paraphrases from the creative works AND the chapters you read this semester (especially “Image, Detail, and Figurative Language”) to support your answers. Use proper MLA in-text citations; a Works Cited page is not required.
2. How does this analysis of literature (i.e., reading like writers) help you draft your own creative works? Feel free to use examples of your own writing to explain your answer.
