Disease is an aberration in the biological norm, illness is the individual experiencing symptoms, and sickness is  the external and public conception of a condition. In order to understand the anthropological approach to health and medicine, it is necessary to know the definitions of terms related to the topics.  For example the taxonomy of medical language shows how much health terms are culturally procured.  It is important for health professionals who treat people from other cultures to understand that what their patients believe can have a great impact on how they should be treated. Howell gave examples of how illness is interpreted differently across different cultures. “Medical anthropologists have found that pain is an extremely difficult experience to convey to others, because it is invisible.” Howell, Introducing Cultural Anthropology, (p.219). Some people may be very open about their pain expressing it loudly or with facial expressions while others will show no signs of being in any pain at all. This can be because in one culture it’s considered “weak” or “shameful” to express their pain and others its acceptable, this can make it very hard for health care professionals to diagnose patients. So understanding the societal norms concerning health cross-culturally can be largely beneficial for treating people. The LEARN model is a framework for cross-cultural communication that helps build mutual understanding and stengthen patient care.

Luis Matos Discussion Board 4.Luis MatosCOLLAPSEDisease, illness, and sickness are three words that we hear and use often in daily conversation. These words are often used interchangeably in common speech and day-to-day discussions. Language itself is culturally derived. Words are given meaning by individuals using them and these definitions can evolve over time. Culture is ever-present all around us and constantly influencing every aspect of our lives. However, anthropologists have very distinct definitions for these closely related terms. “For medical anthropologists, disease focuses on biology, illness focuses on the sufferer’s experience, and sickness focuses on society.” (Howell
