2727 unread repli32 replies. How comfortable was your conversation about “the birds and the bees” (a euphemism for “the sex talk” in English) with your parents?  Or did you have to get your info from friends or siblings–how screwed up was that info?  Or how well did your school handle this and actually prepare you for being a sexual being?
The inadequacy of this talk has led to a lot of fear and life changing mistakes during puberty and early adolescence.
My parents spoke only in scientific terms so my first experience with ejaculate left me terrified and certain I was sick.  I had to figure out what was going on, on my own. 😊 If I had begun to do sexual things when I was really young, I would have had no idea what a condom even was.  I know I am not alone in this struggle early on in life.  How many young women wound up pregnant in their teen years because they didn’t understand what it took to get pregnant?
Why can’t we all just talk openly and honestly about our bodies and how they work?  Why do schools seem to think that parents should handle this when, from what I can tell, for the most part parents are woefully unequipped to handle this job in a responsible way that leads to safe practices.
As we pointed out last week, the fundamental difference between the sexes and between genders is one of the most natural and fundamental parts of being alive (and therefore of being ethical).  So why all the trouble talking about sex?
(Please be clean and respectful as you answer this question.  I don’t need to know details about your sex life.  But I do want you to reflect on how sex gets talked about and taught, and the implications of that.  And, don’t forget that, as I point out in my Power Point, we also have trouble talking to one another about what we want during sexual encounters–hence the ever present issue of date rape and the need for communicative sexuality for consent.  Why are we so scared to put our human sexuality into language?)
