Classical! What is classical about 1750 to 1820? What does “classical” mean? Some thinkers refer to “classical music” as a broad and general category of orchestral or operatic music on one style or another, but by now we know that not all orchestral music is classical (nor is all classical music orchestral), etc. As you become an increasingly intelligent listener (and always a better writer) you will distinguish between Baroque keyboard music, Classical piano sonatas, and later, Romantic masterworks (upcoming modules).
(1) Please choose one famous Classical composer and a composition from that individual which appeals to you. Next dig deeper and find an obscure Classical composer. Choose a piece from the obscure composer you find interesting.
(2) Create a post on the “Call and Response” discussion board stating the composers you chose, titles of pieces you selected, and links to the examples in music you heard. Conclude by describing why you think one composer stands the test of time while another is lost in the archives. If you think the obscure music is more effective in moving your musical soul, speculate as to reasons that may have contributed to on composer’s obscurity.
