Body Piercing: Normal Versus Abnormal BehaviorCOLLAPSEThe concept of what is considered to be abnormal behavior has changed considerably over time and continues to evolve. With such change in the field of abnormal psychology comes the difficult task of categorizing and re-categorizing behavior as normal or abnormal. One example of a present day common behavior, that was not always considered normal, is body piercing. Multiple body piercings were a common ceremonial act in some cultures, yet considered abnormal and even barbaric in others. Present research continues to suggests that numerous body piercings may be a form of self-mutilation.
Explain how multiple body piercings can be considered a form of self-mutilation or a form of self-expression. Can we use our bodies as a canvas to express ourselves or is it an indicator to mental illness?
