For this assignment, you will select a movie that portrays a variety of relationship dynamics and then analyze its realism, grounding your analysis in the scientific literature and using a number of concepts and theories covered in class. You may choose any English-language movie you like, but you will likely have the best luck if you choose a romantic comedy or another movie with prominent relationship (romantic or otherwise) themes.
If you’re planning to review a movie that you have not seen recently, then I strongly recommend re-watching it this week.
DirectionsYour paper should contain the following elements:
Overview: Write a brief overview of the movie (one paragraph). Make sure you use your own words; you should not copy and paste a summary from IMDB or any other source. (5 points)
Analysis: Write an in-depth analysis of at least three key characters, relationships, or relationship events depicted in the movie (at least one paragraph for each). Tie aspects of these characters, relationships, or events to specific concepts or theories that were covered in our textbook or lesson commentary this semester. Do not select a concept that’s simply a broad theme, like “friendship” or “sexuality” or “communication problems”. Instead, select a concept/theory that is more specific, such as a term that is in bold in the textbook. (10 points each, 30 points total)
Define the concept/theory you selected, in your own words.
Support your point by including specific examples of key dialogue, situations, or interactions from the movie.
Make sure you explain how or why the course concept applies to your example.
You may discuss how a given person or event is consistent or inconsistent with what prior research would suggest, as long as you support your claims.
Describe things as though you are explaining it to someone who has not yet seen your film.
Conclusion: Conclude with a paragraph summarizing how accurately, or realistically, you think that relationships were portrayed in this movie, based on what you have learned from this class. Explain why you think it was realistic or not, and be specific about which relationship(s) in the movie you are referring to. (5 points)
(Note: This Conclusion is NOT asking you to summarize what you already wrote in the “Analysis” part above. This Conclusion is asking you for something different.)
Other instructionsAlthough your instructor has seen hundreds of films, still…Please write your paper as though your reader (me) has not seen the film you are critiquing.
