My Favorite Things – Julie Andrews (original soundtrack version), My Favorite Things – John Coltrane

“Cover versions and interpretations”
Tracks:
My Favorite Things – Julie Andrews (original soundtrack version)
My Favorite Things – John Coltrane *

Comment on the differences between these two versions.  How would you describe Julie Andrews approach to interpreting this song?  How would you describe Coltrane’s approach?  Draw from my video to comment on a couple specific aspects of interpretation in these two performances – what lines or phrases stand out to you?  You must also draw a couple direct quotes or references from Cook, Chapter 5 (your last reading response assignment) relating them to the broader questions of interpretation as might be applied to these two recordings.  Write 200 to 300 words per song.

* You can find many versions of Coltrane playing My Favorite Things.  You can chose any version – and you only need to listen to the first few minutes when Coltrane plays the melody of the song.  You don’t need to listen to the improvisations that follow (though of course you can if you like)

There are no “right” answers but I expect you to reference the video material where asked or appropriate.
