Audience analysis – Due
11:59 PMTo pass this assignment, make a post completing the three steps below. Type your work into a word processor so you can save it, and then copy and paste it into the textbox. After making your post, comment on two classmates’ posts.
First, write a specific, precise thesis statement for your persuasive essay: “I am a _______________ because ______________.”
Next, identify and describe your audience for that essay in at least 200 words. Remember, you need to write to people who are opposed to this aspect of your personality or beliefs–people who criticize you, judge you, stereotype you, or simply don’t understand you. Be as specific as you can in describing who these people are. In particular, dive deeply into their values. What underlying beliefs do they hold that cause them to see the world differently than you do? What experiences have they had that make their beliefs different from yours?
Do not demean your audience in this analysis. Try to understand where they are coming from. In other words, if you are writing to Trump supporters, don’t say, “Trump supporters are narrow-minded and stupid.” Likewise, if you are writing to people who are pro-choice, don’t say, “People who are pro-choice are selfish murderers who don’t care about unborn children.” Instead, try to describe Trump supporters or people who are pro-choice in ways they would describe themselves. Do preliminary research about this if you need to. (You’ll do further research next week.)
Write a specific, precise purpose statement for this essay: Why write to those people? What do you hope to accomplish? Format it like this: “I hope to get [the readers you identified in #2] to [do or understand what?]
After posting your audience analysis, reply to at least two classmates’ posts. Choose the people with the fewest replies. In your reply, first make sure there really are people who would disagree with the author’s views. If the author’s thesis statement is “I am an Iowan because I have lived in Iowa all my life,” no one is going to disagree with that! Suggest a more controversial, argumentative topic. Then add to the description of your classmate’s audience (people who disagree with them), and correct any misunderstandings you see.
