The purpose is to gain experience teaching to a group (of at least 4 people) within the community, NOT a family. Be reminded that these project hours are counted as non-preceptored hours. If you conduct your teaching project at the preceptored agency, you cannot double-count the hours as the preceptored hours. If you will not have the opportunity to complete this project at your agency, there are many other options in the community, e.g., local schools, preschools, homeless centers, women’s shelters, local Girl/Boy Scout troops, church groups to name a few. Also check out what groups might be available in your own community. You must have at least 3 measurable behavioral objectives (use ABCD approach). Check out Educational Technology. (2019, April 24). Preparation time is on your own. Role performance time can’t be used. You can invite your instructor/preceptor to attend your presentation; however, they may not be available. The presentation should be at least 30 minutes. However, in the schools, you may have to break this up into 15 or 20- minute segments depending upon the student population (e.g., elementary, middle, high school, and/or college age). Use common sense related to your intended audience. If you are not teaching to an English speaking audience, you need to be fluent in the language of your audience (i.e. Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc.) as you can NOT give your presentation through an interpreter.MUST DOs:Be sure your presentation addresses what the clients want/need.
Assess health literacy beforehand and teach to the client’s level of understanding.
Provide some time for Questions/Answers at the end.
Make the presentation interesting and interactive. Students can do a PowerPoint Presentation, use transparencies or give a conversational oral presentation.
Use teach-back method.
Use the Teaching Format below to summarize your project. You will FIRST submit your teaching summary report to TurnItIn (below).
