“Students will write a 10 page, double spaced essay dealing with a theme not addressed during our class. The world is filled with a myriad of problems. Using ideas and techniques related to the assigned readings, you will think out of the box, make connections, and write a paper that deals with any issue you think should be examined. Be a futurist historian”.
So what could you write about??? I can think of lots of things like:
The Environment
Technology
Globalization
Refugees
Drugs
What kinds of crisis can we expect in the next few decades? How would Max Brooks advise us to be better prepared? How would Isaac Asimov write about them in one of his short stories? You have been exposed to lots of issues and lots of differnt ways of looking at all kinds of issues. Clearly in a four week course, there are subjects I simply haven’t had time to cover. Think of one and write about it. Make it as crazy as you’d like. I am looking for it to make some kind of sense. For example, if you wanted to write about big hurricanes, then lets hear how government agencies would react. FEMA, NOA, the military, etc. How should we prepare? Maybe all these different agencies are too complcated? Maybe with global climate change, we need a weather czar. Should it be controlled by each individual country or should it be under the authority of the UN, like in the Expanse?
